Wow how did you know . Well to be honest I'm still studying about the full project. I know that it’s more of a private project than a public one. But there are some new technologies that we will benefit from. The only thing I'm sure about is that there will be a new internet protocol sometime in the near future I was researching this and discovered that right now we use IPv4 but there a new protocol coming IPv6 from what I found from my own testing is that there are some unique feathers about this protocol but the one that stick out the most is that it will change the IP address. IPv4 uses only 32 bits for IP address space, which allows only 4 billion nodes to be identified on the Internet.
IPv6 allows 128 bits for IP address space, allowing 340282366920938463463374607431768211456 (three hundred forty undecillion) nodes to be uniquely identified on the Internet.

Yes IPv6.0 is new, but it's to do with increasing, as you said, the number of IP addresses on the net, which is currently running low. And when everyones household items and such are connected to the net (only a matter of time?) there'll be enough IPs for everyone, and their toasters.

I've not heard of this internet 2 though, IP6 is for the original, buggy perhaps "release".

Could you image everything connected to the net? The IPv6 is still real buggy. I mean don't get me wrong I love playing with new technology and if you have windows XP you have the IPv6 you'll have to install it but it there and if not you can download it.
The Internet 2 as far as I can tell is more or less just a name it's not a physical Network.
Quote:

Is Internet2 a separate network? Will Internet2 replace the current commercial Internet?

Internet2 is not a separate physical network and will not replace the Internet. Internet2 brings together institutions and resources from academia, industry and government to develop new technologies and capabilities that can then be deployed in the global Internet. Close collaboration with Internet2 corporate members will ensure that new applications and technologies are rapidly deployed throughout the Internet. Just as email and the World Wide Web are legacies of earlier investments in academic and federal research networks, the legacy of Internet2 will be to expand the possibilities of the broader Internet.

I found that on the FAQs at the internet2 web site. Its an Interesting project.

Internet 2 IS a seperate network wich is currently being tested and has been in the works for quite some time now. I can't believe you guys haven't heard of it before it has been being talked about and set up for about 3 years. They just ran a test about 2-3 weeks ago by sending a 6GB file from Amsterdam to New York in like 53 seconds. It is going to not only be bigger than the current internet but MUCH MUCH faster. I am not sure how they are going to work the "switch over" when it is time to do so but they may just simply start replacing parts of Internet with Net2 and expand out from there or they could do things the hard way and set up a completely seperate network and then expect us all to switch over to the new one from the old, this would be, IMHO, a BAD idea...

I may be on a different slant here, but my project dissertation led me to a company called Tonights Menu, which have a very advanced microwave/oven that is connected to the internet through electricity (remember that being talked about a while back), which seems to have been forgotten about. They have a website, but its had all its content removed.

Internet 2 is not new, so to speak. I remember first reading/hearing about it in the late '90s. This link along with the one posted above should be of help;

I just read today that the latest builds of Mozilla have IPv6 support so people now have an alternative for it over IE.

I don't know many sites with it, but this one was mentioned http://www.ipv6.bieringer.de
