Since you are new to programming and new to C, I'd recommend learning the tool (C-language) before building a complex system. There's lots to understand just from the basic programming point of view before getting into extremely advanced topics like networking, hardware, and databases. You need first and foremost a background in the language itself, which it sounds like you are just starting. Trying to learn both at the same time will turn you into an accountant or a musician in no time. ;-)

Basically you're asking how to build the Taj Mahal before you really understand how a saw works. Take it a little slower -- you'll know when you're ready to tackle the big stuff.
