Link submission pages to search engines directories invisible web but not FFA or PPC

The board has been quiet for a while and I thought what better an idea to spur it back into action than a great big collection of submission pages supplied by members would be a good idea.

Many people will say that there is no point submitting to more than Google, DMOZ, Zeal, Alltheweb, Altavista, Lycos, Yahoo and some may say they can survive on just G. However, if you are wanting very specific users to find your site, then a specialised directory may be the key to guiding the traffic to your site. Geographic directories are useful too if the site is particularly aimed in a certain population.

I want to see lots of submissions, but try to avoid duplicating others although it doesn't really matter. If you've found the page and you are affilliated with anything related to this then give us the url where we can submit maybe with a little synopsis if it is highly specific.

Hopefully the submissions will come thick and fast and maybe a page dedicated to it if it becomes worthy. Now begin!

Just to confirm the big guns submission pages.

Yahoo (free/paid) - go to http://dir.yahoo.com and find the page that your site suits your site and choose whether you want the free submit or paid service. If you have a commercial site and you are feeling cheap you can always go to http://www.joepetrow.com/?PAGE=yahoofree and have a go at that.

Zeal (free for non-commercial sites, but membership and test pass required to submit sites) - This will get you into MSN, Looksmart and Wisenut search engine listings. Go to http://www.zeal.com and find the category that suits your site using the search function or browse through categories that you associate with your site. Note that if the site is submitted to the default Zeal sections, then the results will appear in msn.com, looksmart.com listings and also as a filler for other geographic listings if there is a lack of results. So, if your site is more relevant to Australia http://au.zeal.com , Canada http://ca.zeal.com or the UK http://uk.zeal.com then I suggest you make sure that it is submitted to that section instead of the generic us one.

Looksmart (free for non-commercial through Zeal) - Please read above.

Open directory / DMOZ (free submission, but long wait for popular categories) - You MUST get everything completely correct to get into DMOZ without a long wait. If you submit a site with little content, it will simply get deleted, if it is submitted to the wrong category it may get deleted or moved to a new category. The problem with this is that it goes to the back of the queue and so the wait could be doubled. Many people try and put their site into the highest category possible, which is already a bad idea with the amount of competition there is for other sites. Try and find a very specific lower down page and I reckon you will have a far greater chance of a quick acceptance. Oh and the link is http://www.dmoz.org

Check out http://gidhelp.com/search_engines.php for advice on how to submit to DMOZ and Zeal.

Alltheweb (free/paid submission) http://www.alltheweb.com/help/webmas...bmit_site.html Free submission is at the bottom.

Google (free) http://www.google.com/addurl.html most people know this one, but here you go for the book. Your site will normally be found by Google if it is linked to by another site in its massive collection.

Lycos / Hotbot (should be paid, but this is free) - No promises that this still works, but check out http://www.hotbot.lycos.co.uk/submit.html and try the submission there.

Ask Jeeves / Teoma (not free) - There is currently no way to get into these for free at this time unless your site happens to get crawled by them.

Altavista (paid / free) - http://addurl.altavista.com/ allows you to submit as many as 6 urls per login (no signup required) although it seems that it takes quite a while to be indexed.

Gigabalast (free) - Up and coming search engine, with instant indexing of the urls you submit. This won't crawl through your site so only the pages you submit will appear http://www.gigablast.com/addurl and be warned the submission function is down from time to time so just check back later.

Business.com (paid) - I realise most people won't need to submit to this one, but I thought it was rather good for the money if I was selling something. Just have a look at the partners http://www.business.com/info/partners.asp. Go to the front page http://www.business.com/ and select list my site to submit. At the time of posting this it was $99 per year.

Invisible-web (free) - "The directory includes resources that are informative, of high quality, and contain worthy information from reliable information providers that are not visible to general-purpose search engines. " Go find the category related to you at http://www.invisible-web.net/ and then submit an e-mail to the authors.

Hope this post was useful to someone.

Don't worry about it JDS I started the thread, therefore I should do quite a bit of the work
Anyway here is a new one that may be quite useful, or it may be just a way to get your e-mail address who knows.
For consideration of getting into the Inktomi MSN search for free go to
http://free.submit-it.com/msnsubmit.htm. I've never seen this page before nor seen it mentioned unless I'm being blind, which either means it doesn't work anymore or not many people know about it. It would be nice if it worked

Another one of note is entireweb that is seen on Mamma.com, Ixquick, moonmist and of course entireweb with some others it doesn't mention specifically. They are apparently seeing 150,000,000 searches per month so they may be worth a dabble. They are claiming it takes 8-10 weeks to process new submissions but here's the URL anyway. http://www.entireweb.com/eng/addurl/.
