Link to our site suggestions / ideas

I have noticed on many sites a page is available suggesting ways to link to the site mainly from PR enthusiasts and SEO optimisers. I do however, think it is a good idea if done properly without too much "in your face" selling.
For my page I was thinking of having three different choices of ways to link: a text link, a button link and a unusually shaped, but small banner link (non animated).

What I want to know is:
a) What should I include in the text of the link and alt text?
b) Should I put title text and onmouseover text too?
c) What is a max size for 88x31 gif button and also the banner?
d) Should I make it so they upload the image onto their site or make the default img src to my image?
e) Anything else you'd like to suggest?

People may think I'm wanting something for nothing, so what is the best way of rewarding them in some way without having to place their banner on the front page. This doesn't have to be even link related so any suggestions welcome
One idea I have is to allow them to have an entry into the articles section that would also appear on the front page for a while that is solely about their site as long as it is related to my site even in a weak sense.

'PR enthusiasts' and people generally interested in Link Popularity will contact you personally via email most of the time. Unless there is a way for them to add their website to a link / directory script on your website, no one with a decent PR will be using your 'how to link to us' page much, I assure you.

If you go the way of a Link / Directory script on your website then a how to link to us page would make more sense.
  1. Though I don't personally use the alt and title tags all the time (simply because I am lazy) I can assure you that they are important if you put some relevant, key words to describe the banner or link. The trick is to NOT abuse it and spoil it for the rest of us...
  2. Put the 'onmouseover' / 'status' text if you want, any webmaster worth his salt can easily remove it if he/she has a problem with leaving it as-is in the link code.
  3. Keep 468 banners under 14K? Don't know, not sure...
  4. Most webmasters know now that loading a picture/image off another domain usually adds to the load time of a webpage considerably so you should allow both and recommend that they upload the image to their web server so that it does not bog their page load times...

Thanks for your ideas JDS. Everything you said seemed to make sense and I've been trying desperately hard to think of something poignant to reply to it.
Maybe I'll make a little zip file so everything is there for them in one nice little package along with the original plan.
Oooh I just had a great idea. I currently have a load of dowloadable video clips etc and I have placed them in a video format. Maybe I could (ahem) slip something in there in case it gets passed around and people like what I have done and who knows, they may even have a site to link to mine.
