cd burner problem

my co-worker asked me to look at his comp, but im stuck as to the problem... when i try to burn a cd, it says:
recorder reported a buffer entry error
data transfer rate was not fast enough
driver error code=02040000h

it is an Atapi cd-r/rw crw6206A
the comp previously had Windows ME. It now has XP. No driver problems, 500mhz, 184mb RAM, the burn speed on the burner is 2x max.
Is the burner too slow? does he need to buy a new one?

Any help is appreciated....

I'ts a pretty old computer, I think XP claims on the box it requires a minimum of 256 megs of ram and thats rated conservatively. What program are you using to burn? Or are you burning with the XP software?

Ive tried Cakewalk Pyro and Windows Media Player, both with no avail...
Media Player only says it cannot burn cd. Check to make sure it is clean or try a different cd.

I believe the minimum speed required by XP is 12x, so the CD may need to be faster to run properly.

I've got Nero and it will burn at 2x. I think they have a trial or demo version at their web site. http://ww2.nero.com/us/index.html. You might try a lens cleaner, or You can pick up a new burner or even R/W for $20-30.
