Assembly?

Eugh, it's got no decent loops, you play around with memory addresses instead of variables most of the time and it's logic hell, loads of GOTOs which are horrible.

Try something like C/C++ instead, of which there's books on game development.

A better bet (but it might cost money) might be www.darkbasic.com which if you've any Basic or Visual Basic experience should come to you pretty quick. It won't run as fast as C/C++ or Assembly, but the site's got good tutorials and it'll be a good introduction.

I've played with dark basic before. But I was look at assemble because of the speeds and that I would like to understand it a little better.

Well then unless you're really up for it, I'd settle with C++. But it's your choice after all. I do recommend DJGPP if you're going down C/C++ route, it's a good compatible compiler, not many bugs (well that I've found anyway).

I think it's full of GUI widgets, like WYSIWYG interfaces to your program. But for gaming? I don't think that Visual C++ was built for that. It does have it's compiler and it's a good debugger too, but it does take system resources up.
