Question

Home server, IP, nameserver, forwarding?

Hi, I am trying to run my personal web page in my computer. I have apache, php, mysql set up and all seems to be running well. This is what I did so far

1. My web site is up and running when I try localhost
2. My web site is up and running when I try "http://my.ip.address"
3. I bought a domain name from godaddy
4. I left the default nameserver they had already on godaddy
5. I went to their forward domain site and input my "http://my.ip.address"
6. My web site is up and running when I try "http://mynewdomain.com

Now, I went this far and I have a question... but first my problems: I've been trying to understand what the nameserver is for. Besides that when I look at the source of my website its just a simple five liner that godaddy replaces my original index.html. And in the source file it shows my IP address that goddady forwarded to which I want to conceal. I don't know how to open up a new window (second page) from my webpage without displaying my IP address (rough ex. getURL "http://my.ip.address/newpage", _blank). Another problem with not having my original index.html is that I am using javascript to open my new window and as my javascript is in my original index file it wont work!

So my questions:
1. Is it possible to conceal my IP address and only use the purchased domain name?
2. I would like to use: http://www.mydomainname.com/secondpage but it doesn't let me and only http://www.myipaddress.com/secondpage works. Can this be fixed?
3. Do I have to use forward domain feature to use my purchased domain name?

Thank you

All you need as to add an A record for your domain, the A record should contain your ip address.

If you can't create A records at godaddy you can create an account at a free DNS provider and create the A record there, and point your domain to there nameservers

I'm using the provided nameservers at namecheap and created an A record to point to my webhost

Hmm, so "A Record" is something different than nameserver? And "A Record" is a one and only term everyone uses? Anyone else uses Godaddy and knows anything about this?

thanks

It is actually an "A" record.

Your computer will ask the nameserver for the "A" record, for your domain.

in the gidforums.com case it will return 64.59.83.64
Your browser will now connect to this ip address and request your website. But your browser will display your domain and links like example.com/test will work fine

There are lots more record types.. 'MX' for your email, for example

Great, I found the A record in Godaddy and changed it and now it works! Thanks.
FYI:
Godaddys domain setup window was blocked by my pop up blocker so I didn't noticed before that I had an extra setup feature.

Re: Home server, IP, nameserver, forwarding?

ok .... I have the same problem with redirecting to another ip address, but can btring up the "A" section at godaddy.com. My question is, what if I connect 3 computers to a linksys router and then to the broadband router supplied by my ISP/Internet provider. I can obtain the ip address at whatismyip.com, but it's to the ISP router. So, I connect my linux box that i have setup and try to access the internet from there, but nothing. I reconnect everything back up to the linksys router like before, and its ok.
