Your thoughts on Art

What do you guys think. Is art something that can be taught like learning to draw. The reason I'm asking is I'm thinking of learning 3D Modeling and texturing and I was wounding if in your opinion trying to learn to texturing and drawing would be a waste of my time?

I'm absolutely terrible at drawing so art packages have bee na godsend to me since I can make as many mistakes as I want and be able to get back to how it was. It helps the confidence too! I'm currently practicing on Macromedia Fireworks MX but I'm sure others will say which package they would recommend.

My first instinct is to say AutoCAD since its the daddy of the 3D modelling and texturing world. It costs a pretty penny though unless you can get some sort of student licence. I did a quick search but I didn't find anything especially. I got some names of programs though here if you are interested:

I found quite a good page even though the site is about boats This may give you an idea on more recent packages:

Thanks for the link I'm going to check out autocad I'm not sure about the modeling software yet but I have 3D Studio Max 5.1 I was thinking that I would stick to that. And what do you think about Photoshop I think Its 5 or 6 not sure?

Photoshop 6 is really good although I don't think it is as helpful as AutoCAD for 3D modelling. To give you some idea of what it is capable of have a look at the resources here:
http://www.3dcafe.com/asp/tutphotoshop.asp . There is absolutely loads on this site so it might take you a while to navigate it all. Some of the 3D models and textures are absolutely brilliant.

I wasn't think of photoshop for 3D modeling. I was thinking I had to use two programs one for 3D modeling (3D Studio Max) and the other for texturing (photoshop) I thought you had to use two?
