Sports and personal participation

What kind of sports do you like to participate in? I used to love playing baseball but the last league I joined was full of mid 20's guys and they had me by about 8 years. Needless to say standing in the box while some youngster hurled a ball at me in the 75 mph range cured me of that.

Lately I have taken up golf. I spent the last year traveling for work with a friend of mine that was retired military. He dragged me out to the course and gave me quite a few pointers that made the game fun. We have quite a few nice courses around here and I have to say once I figured out how to swing through with an iron the game got much more enjoyable. Plus, it's easier to compete with the younger guys.

My real favorite would be skiing though. I am very jealous of anyone that lives in the American West or anywhere near serious mountains. We only have little worn down mountains on the east coast with verticals in the 1000 ft range. Fun but not terribly exciting. I am torn about my favorite skiing of all time. A few years back I was lucky enough to travel to Switzerland and got to ski the alps. I found that because of the size (even the steeps seemed to be very wide) I was able to ski above my perceived level. To top it off they serve heated wheels of Summer Cheese on bread to keep the energy levels up. Most excellent.
That was a lot of fun but I still think that Jackson Hole Wyoming is the best place I have ever been. It seemed like the kind of place you could spend years at and never tire of. The cold was quite simply amazing but the first day my brother and I were there the mountain was inverted. Inversion is when the top is warmer than the bottom. It was amazing. You would be freezing when you got on the gondola (maybe 5 degrees F) but when you got out it was almost 20 at the peak. As you reached the bottom you would feel like you just skiied into a bowl full of ice and race back to the top. I really enjoyed it there.

I am decidedly the worlds worst golfer ever. No one can take this dubious honor from me. I have completely given up on golf as my frustration levels with it far exceeded any enjoyment I got out of the game.

I have not skiied for several years and I live about 30 minutes away from some pretty good skiing. (The Wasatch Mountains in Utah). I love to ski, but with the young kids that I have, it makes it difficult to go do much of anything like this.

The one thing that I do enjoy as well is playing football. Even if it is just tossing around the ole pigskin with a friend. I have always fancied myself to be a "Hines Ward" type receiver and I have a friend how can make some darn good throws. (He's actually broken my fingers on two different occasions - not sure if they were actually broke, but my hand swelled up and I couldn't move my fingers...) It is kind of hilarous to watch the pros play on sunday and then go out and try to make the throws that these guys make. If you are wondering, these guys are good!

I can tell you guys aren't Europeans. Nobody mentioned soccer!!
I used to play a lot of it, but now I use my "free time" for sleeping. I wonder if that will do something for my health...
