Cool

TopFunWebsites.com - The entertainment portal for YOU!

Well I've made so many changes to the site over the past month and now I've completely overhauled it to make a massive single portal. The old portal is at:
TopFunWebsites.com

The new web portal is at:http://www.topfunwebsites.com/mambo/ and has a forum, guestbook, news feed and I will be transferring the games and selectively chosen websites soon. Please tell me what you think of it all.

Wow.. Purple! Looks like a really bad Prince album cover

Interesting, I have never heard of this particular script before this. Loads times are not so great, but that just might be my connection at the moment.

So you finally decided to go the way of PHP... Is the script using a database or a bunch of text files?

Yeah cheesy Prince is the way to go man didn't you know? Load times are probably a bit high at 40+K but that is probably because of the number of newsfeeds I chose to have on the screen at once. If you removed the pictures and the shoutbox it would be down to 22-23kb. The core program uses the MySQL database but the components and modules(official and unofficial) can use either. I'm not sure what I am talking about but the admin area is particularly outstanding on it with database optimisation and all that jazz.

Newsfeeds? Hmmmm... You're just draining your page rank potential for your pages, especially so early in the race!

I would seriously suggest either using JavaScript to serve the links off the Newsfeed or remove them altogether.

On a lighter note, I notice HM The Queen has visited your website recently!

Okay my intention IS to keep the newsfeeds but they do not necessarily have to be on the front page or anywhere near it. Its quite easy to put it in some sort of easy to get to subsection. I have no idea how to put them into javascript I'm afraid.

I didn't know the Queen was such an avid browser of the net she must have got caught out when she realised that picture got out of her at the football. Well if you think about it she used email before I was even born so she's well ahead of the game

I don't know what the queen is into but that link she gave however innocent sounding it was when you clicked onto it, it went to a very "colourful" site for lack of a better nondescript word. Anyway I changed it lol

I have today perfected the e-card section so it looks great (well to me anyway). Members of the site can now upload their own images (40kb max at the moment) and send them as postcards.

This is better than just attaching an image to an e-mail and then sending it. I might consider allowing people to send a single image to 4-5 people at a time if the demand for it appears.

OekakiPoteto

Hi guys, could you test this online drawing package for me at http://www.topfunwebsites.com/oekaki/ and first tell me what you think of it and secondly if it works okay for you. It needs MicrosoftVM or Sun's JRE if you prefer, but any up to date windows machine should definitely work. If you want to draw, then you'll have to register, so I hope you don't mind. Look forward to what you have to say.

I like your design, the colours go nicely, but it is a little slow loading. But if it's good enough for the Queen.....

You do need a logo. The drawing application worked for me, but as I'm no Picasso I didn't save anything.

Thanks for testing it Garth, please if you could next time post what you do that would be really cool. My pictures may look like Picasso, but I don't think I've ever had anyone call them art . I did make a quick logo that appears on some of the other pages of the site, but I haven't especially delved into working how to get it to display where I want inside the program. As for the slow loading I have gzipped the page, but all I can do now is limit the dimensions and file size of the images people make as well as limit how many pictures will appear on each page. I forget that I am on a better connection. Is there a site anywhere that tells you roughly how long a certain bytesize will take different connection speeds to download. I know its silly, but it may help me out from time to time.
