Opinion PleaseOkay, let me tell you what I need to do and you give me your opinion on what would be best...also mention where I get the needed software.
I am going to create a website that will take information and put it into a database. Also, I am emailed with the information. Now, the only people to access the website will be within the company. If I have not given enough details please write me back and I will spill out more of the knowledge. Thanks __________________

You could do this very easily with an Apache Webserver, PHP scripting support and a MySQL server.
That unfortunately is the EASY part... Writing the 'application' is the hardest thing to do plus you need to design your database tables optimally and that requires some significant "learning-time" too.__________________

Damn that Relational Database Design and those pesky entity relationships. I really dislike drawing ER diagrams and that whole Normalization process. 1NF, 2NF bla... Essentially, I really dislike writing anything on paper But if ya want a solid database with no repeating groups this is the recommended method.. [/rant] peace |

Correct?!?Again,
thanks for the replys. Okay, this is what I think I know so far. lol I would like to use Frontpage to make the website. As I am told, with this program, a database can be appended "easily". Easily is always subjective though. Anyways, if I understand correctly, if I use the Frontpage and link the database using the Frontpage program then I don't need an ASP page in the background. Is this all true or do I have some errors in what I have been told. Also, I believe that my server's OS is windows 2000, service pack 4. Will this pose a probelm with the IIS functionality? btw, as far as programming experience, I have moderate experience with C++. Thanks for the thoughts. __________________

I started learning ASP too long ago to remember anything useful. I also started with MS FrontPage when I started designing web pages.
I don't think you can connect to a database simply using the FrontPage program, at least I don't remember being able to do that. You will need an ASP script to do that usually. __________________

Hmmm, okay well let me say a few things.
I have found out that I will be using a current intranet server. I have been told that I need some software so that I can run the website plus the link to the database. What software would this be...brandnames would be great. As of right now I have no limitations on what I do as far as the software. The platform of the computer/server that I will be using is Window 2000, with service pack 4. I have looked through the programs currently installed on the computer and I have found only two which look like software that I could use. Hummingbird suite (Exceed, host explorer, FTP) Smart FTP I know I am full of questions and I have many more on the way. Thanks for taking the time to respond. __________________

I understand how you feel (so many questions unanswered) when you are thoroughly motivated to get something done and done fast.
For the moment you MUST decide which way you want to go. ASP / Access or PHP / MySQL? Of course there are other options as well but these are the popular ones. Based on that decision, you can then decide which web server to install which would be your first task to complete. __________________

I think you would like PHP, since it has some similarities to C, and even C++ to a degree (PHP 5.0 is supposed to be even closer to C++ as far as the way it handles classes).
If you don't mind learning something REALLY new, and don't mind *pain*, try coding with .ASP. I've done alot of VB, VBA, and even C# coding. I think I enjoyed Cobol more than .ASP, though. |
