use knoppix to recover windows files

hi
can anyone explain how to get knoppix (the version that u boot from cd - not instal to hd) to detect my hard drive so i can either backup files, or replace corrupted windows files?
it detects hda1 - but all i can see is "outbox" this is one of many folders on my HD - such as where is my "windows" folder, inbox, films, my documents, music , etc etc

is there some sort of control panel to go to to detect hard drives, how can i make knoppix detect the other files that ARE on the hard drive.?
found lodas of help files and tutes for knoppix/linux but none resolve this...
cheers

hmm... That doesn't sound good actually. I have used Knoppix several times to get to data on dead machines. It usually recognizes the hard drive immediately and places it as an icon on the desktop. It is read-only, but all of the data is there.

It could be that your hard disk is really messed up...
