I am a new programmer to C++. Can anyone recommend ways to improve my programming skills? I want to learn C++ and Visual C++. I have already taken some classes.

Thanks

Hi Wendy,

Im not a "Huge Bird" yet but just some experience that I had.

if your goal is windows based software developing, MFC might be the one you should start to look at now. (I presume that you have got good understanding of inheritance and polymorphysim and you know the basic principle how windows program works such as message handlling)

if what you want is only programming skills, I wouldn't recommend you starting looking at MFC. Instead, a C++ book(a bit deeper than C++ text book)such as "the C++ programming language" or "the C++ Primer" with lots of practice might suit you. Thet say a data structure and algorithm (explained in C++) book is good for your programming skills development although you really don't have to worry about too much because the Standard Template Library has done most of them for you.

Sorry I have no idea about your level and probably you are far beyond all of the above.but wish you good luck anyway.

Same as with the piano -- practice. And grab another book or two which will give you more techniques. Then adopt and adapt what you learn into your own style.

Search the board for book suggestions.

I'm always here... and posting questions here will help others that have the same (or similar) questions.
