Ok, I got to the point after the ndiswrapper -i ...bcmw15.inf part. I got the command not found for the ndiswrapper utility like the above poster as well, and ended up having to use the full path to ndiswrapper. Any ideas where to put it or to make it?

Anyways now when I try to modprobe I get the same command not found. Does Fedora Core 3 not use it or something? Do I need to use the full path to it as well.

Any help getting those listed as commands would be a big help. Thanks

Hi goldsaturn25 & welcome to GIDForums™. Sorry for taking so long to reply. Have you installed this from source then without any problems or was it already on your fedora system? Also, are you running the utility as root and modprobe as root?

Unfortunately I don't run Fedora so I am not sure why there are struggles with getting this to work. As long as you have the kernel sources installed and pathed properly this should be pretty easy...

Well, since my last post I found modprobe, in /sbin/, but I still have to type out /sbin/modprobe.

It compiled fine, but now when I try to modprobe it gives me a driver not found error.

ndiswrapper -l gives me

bcmwl5 driver present, hardware present

but modprobe still can't find it. Most frustrating.
Please note, I've only been using unix/linux for about 4 months so there is probably just something basic I'm not doing.

Thanks again

Hi GoldSaturn. It is probably even more frustrating when you don't get a reply for a week. Sorry about that.

Anyway, I still am thinking that you may not be the root user when you are doing the modprobe. /sbin/ should be in the super user path so you shouldn't need to type it at all. Can you tell me if you are doing this as root or not?

Unable to get the driver to load using ndiswrapper.

Hi,

I'm having the same problem as goldsaturn. when i run the dmesg utility from the Konsole i get an error message for ndiswrapper saying that the driver could not be loaded. I'm using suse linux 9.0 professional and we were definately logged in as root (since there were no other users defined at the time)

Hope u can help.

Thanx.

Hi kaoto. Welcome to GIDForums™.

When you do a modprobe ndiswrapper do you get any errors? It sounds like perhaps ndiswrapper is loading but it can not load the driver for the network card perhaps? What network card are you using?

I am using the belkin 54g pci card, the F5D7000. When i modprobe it doesnt error but it displays and error when i use the dmesg utility instead. The error given says that the driver could not be loaded. Any ideas?

since the time of posting i'm afraid i have developed another problem. at first when i used the modprobe no errors were reported now, however when i do it it gives a whole host of errors, unresolved symbols mostly, which it wasn't doing yesterday.

Hi Kaoto. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Did you rebuild ndiswrapper? It seems strange that it was inserting into the kernel fine one day and not the next. Did you rebuild your kernel or do anything else that might have changed it?

Also, as for the F5D7000 there are several flavors. Are you using the .inf file off the original CD shipped with the card? If you are (or aren't) you may want to look at the ndiswrapper wiki list of cards that are known to work. It can be found here

It is interesting to note that there is a F5D7000 (presumably revision 1) and a F5D7000 Rev. 3 listed, but not Rev.2. Do you know which one your card is specifically? There is an outside chance that your card may not be working yet with ndiswrapper.

Found a some info from the SUSE site that may help people. Most of it is a rehash of what dsmith said but it may help some people.

Situation
You want to use a network card supported by Windows drivers (NDIS) with Linux.

NDIS, which stands for "Network Device Interface Specification", is a standard for the connection of network cards (hardware) to network protocols (software).

Some manufacturers of wireless LAN hardware do not want to release any hardware specifications and/or drivers for their products for operating systems other than Microsoft Windows.

The Ndiswrapper project enables to use this hardware with Linux by means of a kernel module that "wraps itself around" the NDIS driver, thus providing support for some Windows network drivers under Linux.

A list of the supported chipsets is available at: http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/s..._chipsets.html

Procedure
Install the package ndiswrapper via YaST2.

Download the manufacturer driver for your card. The above-mentioned web page supported_chipsets.html includes some direct links to manufacturer home pages.

We recommend you the use of archives (.zip,.tar.gz), since they can be unpacked in Linux.

The following lines describe the procedure for the network card RTL8180L.

Go to the web page of the manufacturer and save the relevant ZIP archive in the directory /tmp.

Open a text console e.g. by clicking on the icon representing a monitor with a shell in the tool bar on the lower screen border in KDE. Enter the following command in the displayed window:

su -

Enter root's password when prompted to do so. Note that no output is displayed on the screen when typing the password.

Unpack the file with the command:

unzip -d driver /tmp/winxp-8180\(168\).zip

Note: The back slashes (\) in the file name must be entered manually in order to mask the brackets. As an alternative, you can use the extension with TAB so that the file name is automatically completed.

A new subdirectory (/tmp/driver) is created when unpacking the file. This subdirectory contains the file .INF required by Ndiswrapper.

Proceed to install the driver by entering the path to the file INF (ndiswrapper -i /PATH_TO_FILE/NET8180.INF). In this example:

ndiswrapper -i /tmp/driver/NET8180.INF

The output displayed should be similar to:

Installing net8180

Check if the driver has been properly installed with the command:

ndiswrapper -l

If this is the case, the following output will be displayed:

Installed ndis drivers:
net8180

Load the module with the command:

modprobe ndiswrapper

If the command does not return any error messages, the driver has been successfully loaded. The output of the command dmesg displays additional information:

ndiswrapper version 0.6+CVS loaded
ndiswrapper adding rtl8180.sys

Once the driver is loaded, the WLAN interface must be configured.

For this purpose, proceed as described in the article http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2002/11/wavelan.html

Information

If everything works, you can enter the following command to load the module when the system starts:

ndiswrapper -m

Please note that the use and installation of ndiswrapper as well as any problems derived from it exceed the scope of the free-of-charge installation support.

quick thx...

Thx dsmith for the awesome tutorial on installing the Belkin wireless card using ndiswrapper. I have an 802.11g card (F5D7011) in my laptop (confirmed Broadcom chipset) and I thought I was out of options for installing it under mepis linux.

That lspci command is a cool trick. It showed me this::
Broadcom Corperation BCM4306 802.11 b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev.03)

Thats quite a bit of stuff it would take some time for me to dig out of WinXP.
Thx again for sharing your knowledge...
