New DVD format in the works: Uses paper Disks!

A recent http://www.zdnet.com.au/reviews/hardware/storage/0,39023427,39145146,00.htm states that Sony is working on a new DVD format that can hold 25GB. It uses blue laser technology (current dvd's use red lasers). Another interesting note, the article says that the DVDs will use "paper" discs. This is supposed to reduce the cost of DVD's by a lot.

I could see Sony coming out with technology like that, so I am not skeptical about it, but I am just curious as to the details of this new DVD format. Has anyone heard any more about this technology, or seen it in action?

From what I've heard, it's going to be the Blu-Ray DVD that's starting to come out. The paper disc is kinda like the paperboard milk cartons, with a thin plastic protective coating. This will allow them to be recyclable or at least "greener" when tossed out. AFAIK, it hasn't become a true standard or anything; mostly just a proof-of-concept to see if paper could be used vs. the current standard. But I suspect it will soon be what Sony turns out (probably much cheaper to create).

Oh yes, I have been following this "Blu-ray vs. HDDVD" war since the news broke a few days ago.

Sony on the one side has recently got Disney in it's camp (with Blu-ray) while Toshiba and gang managed a hattrick of sorts when they got the 4 other major studios (Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures and New Line Cinema) to back them instead.

It's that ol' Betamax vs. VHS war all over again. Maybe this time SONY will win? Maybe not...

Just found today an article about making discs from cornstarch. The INQUIRER. Looks like bio-discs are the "wave of the future".
