Do you mean Sempron? (I thought you were talking about biology, at first glance ).

Sempron is an AMD64 chip that's been "chopped" to create a 32-bit CPU. They are replacing Athlon XPs as the entry level chip for AMD. You can get them for Socket A mobo's (to replace Athlons) or the newer Socket754 boards.

Basically, it's for people who don't want to upgrade to 64-bit processors yet, but want better performance than Athlons offer. It still has many of the features of the 64's, but in a 32-bit version.

Ah, so its not a worse version of Athlon but a better one? Oh and sorry for the spelling, late at night.

For what I understood, Sempron is AMD's replacement for Duron. It wasn't as powerful as Athlon XP, but a bit more powerful than Duron.

It does replace the Duron, but only because it's the Duron version of the AMD64. It's a chopped version of the 64-bit chip, so it will be faster than the Athlon, but still compatible w/ the Athlon mobo's (at least the SocketA Semprons). It's more like a transitional CPU until the world moves to full 64-bit systems.

Right now, AMD64's only give ~15% improvement over Athlons and that's only because they're faster and have more cache. Semprons are ~7%, but are several hundred dollars less.
