Question

Upgrade Firmware ???

hi guys

i have a small question to ask
i want to upgrade my SAMSUNG Cd-Rw firmware
model :- SW-248FRNS

before upgrading i want to know whether or not there is a risk of any kind in upgrading the firmware

and also if while upgrading the firmware the procedure gets interupted in between, due to say power faliure, is that going to cause any harm to my drive ???

i downloaded the firmware from this page:-
http://www.cdfreaks.com/drive/firmware/969

thanx

As with any upgrade, there's always the possibility of a bug being included (hence the need for upgrades). Many applications give you the chance to backup the current firmware before the upgrade so that, should something happen (bad upgrade or power failure), you can reinstall the original w/ no harm.

i found this warning given in a help file of Seatools Enterprise Edition (A seagate software)

It's says
DO NOT power down the server or the drive during this upgrade process. If drive power is lost during a firmware upgrade, the drive will be destroyed. Wait until all drive / LED activity has ceased before powering off the drive. The upgrade process should not take more than 3 minutes per drive.

so according to them, in case of a power failure my hardware may get destroyed.

Also the software that they are providing does not give any option with which i can take a backup of my current firmware

can you plzzzzzz help

Well, "youse plays the game, youse takes youse chances."

It sounds like the help file you found is for server HD upgrades (can't tell for certain). I haven't had any problems doing upgrades, apart from new bugs being created. But firmware rarely creates new problems, unless it requires you to get new drivers.

I would just make sure to follow the instructions and warnings from the Samsung site that the CDFreaks linked to. Just make sure not to mess w/ your system until it's done.
