GPL'ed imagery, icon or emoticon types

Hello All,

We are working on a Community Project called GIM and will need a library of images to be used for different purposes (on interface elements, buttons, calender reminders etc).

I was wondering if anyone could provide a link or info to this type of graphics. Mostly, they would be between 25x25 to 100x100 for placement in a window created with the graphic user interface library FLTK. I know there must be some good repositories of this type of image but I keep getting bogged down with aim client type links.

Any information would be most helpful. If there are any bitmap artists out there (or anyone with an artistic eye would be a GREAT improvement 8-) ) that might like to check out what we are up to, you can follow the link in my signature to the GIM project. It is just starting up but could be fun. We really could use someone to help us with those little bitmaps that make everything look so much nicer.

It might be useful, but I don't think it's what the project wants. I plan on making a few as soon as I find a good icon editor (preferably for use in Linux).

I did find the attached file today. There's about 25 or so icons; fairly standard stuff but maybe useful for the alpha version or for testing.

File Type: zip proico.zip (13.9 KB, 169 views)

Thanks for the info. I will keep an eye on this in case it gets filled out sometime. Unfortunately Crystalattice's right, we are looking for a much wider selection of imagery. I do appreciate the response though. It's looking more and more like were are going to need a bitmap artist. Sounds like Crystalattice is on it. :-)

Actually, I did find an icon editor for Linux today. I just hadn't looked hard enough; KDE comes w/ it's own icon editor: KIconEdit. Thankfully it has about 10 image files to save as so we won't have any problems.

BTW, is there a particular image type we need these in? I was thinking for anyone making "home-brew" icons should use PNG, as an arbitrary choice (and because it's the non-royalty format replacing GIF).

Icons needed

While I'm thinking about it, what are some icons we're looking at? Here's a random list of things I've thought of:
  • dentist appt.
  • doctor's appt.
  • veterarian appt.
  • birthday
  • haircut appt.
  • major holidays
  • school test
  • graduation
  • wedding
  • airline reservation
  • car maintenance
  • payday
  • bill payment
  • job deadline
  • anniversary

Any other important things I've missed, please post here so anyone who wants to help out knows what's needed. I don't think having multiple versions of any of them is a problem since icons are a personal taste.

I can't say my artist eye is any good (heck, I'm nearly blind) but I'll give it a shot, as time permits.

Cool, I haven't found one I like yet. Bitmap graphics need specialized tools due to the small scale. Most that I have checked out seem to be lacking. Let me know if KIconEdit pans out.

I agree with you there. PNG seems to be a sensible choice. Another thing we should take into consideration. Some base sizes for sets. I know you are interested in using the icons as visual clues (like our type of contact example) and at such low resolutions scaling doesn't always pan out so well. I placed a 100x100 image at the bottom (like an entries picture) and I think perhaps 20x20 might be another size we are interested in. Unless there is a better way to do scaling.

Hehe, I am still giving myself a doh' over the last pm. I saw it as I sent it. I need to make a few small tests to see if we can attach small icons to the menus like firefox does for favorites.

For types of Contacts:

Just some thoughts.
