Re: Missing or corrupt ntfs.sysSo here's my issue. I have everything ready to re-install, but when I go to the windows install, and it has me choose where to install the new version of windows, there are no disks to choose from. The only thing it will let me do is repartition or reformat (i can't remember which) the hard drives.
I do not want to do that! Can somebody help me? I know this topic is outdated, but I still need help! I want to get this fixed soon. I ordered a HDD controller card so that I can install the other new hard drive I have, so I might have a chance of installing windows on that, but I'm really worried about this. I have no backups of my information, and I've already lost my whole drive once... |

Re: Missing or corrupt ntfs.sysHi, I have met the same problem as some previous guys mentioned, i.e., when I get to recovery console, I even couldn't use "dir", and it just responded with the following message:
"An error occurred during directory enumeration" After consulting with some senior technical support from Dell, I realized this is actually the problem of corruption on master boot record. One previous post is right. Although there is a fix for this master boot record damage problem by typing "FIXMBR" in the recovery console, but it should be the LAST resort you want to try as the data on your drive may become unreachable and mean a complete lost. The most safest choice is to get out your hard drive out from the computer, set it as a primary slave drive and put it into the other working computer system. As a slave drive, the damage of the master boot record usually will not affect the capability of accessing the content on this drive if we load it from a new working computer. And it works for me. I can access the data of this hard drive, and I am actually now copying the data to a temporary drive for backup. After this, I will try to fix the master boot record problem by using "FIXMBR" in the recovery console. I will keep you guys posted about whether it can be fixed. Hope this will be helpful to some future guys who met the same problem. I found this forum by googling with the error message "An error occurred during directory enumeration", and thanks for all previous posts, they are very helpful. |

Re: Missing or corrupt ntfs.sysGuys - just had to register to say thanks a million for all the ideas - you saved my life!
First symptom - "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully", rebooting in a loop, safe mode did the same. Following advice in this thread, booted using the XP CD and selected 'R' for repair. Never got asked to select an OS (have been here before and always was asked in the past) - straight to a c: prompt. Typing DIR gave "an error occurred during directory enumeration". Was about to go for the format drive solution, when I read the CHKDSK /R advice. (Note - had to change to CD drive, and the i386 directory to do this, so then the command was CHKDSK C: /F /R) This took forever (around 2 hours) and looked at times as if it had hung, but it eventually completed, and reported one problem fixed. Rebooted, and hey! it's party time! Now in the process of doing a full backup Thanks again guys! |

Re: Missing or corrupt ntfs.sysI came a crossed this thread and wanted to say thanks for the tips! nothing worked for me, but wanted to comment on this:
Quote:
The above is what happened to me. I did manage to find a program that allowed me to save like 98% of my important "lost" files (your mileage may vary). Anyhow I wanted to share what I used. Its called "Zero Assumption Recovery" or ZAR. Good luck! |

Re: Missing or corrupt ntfs.sysQuote:
Me too. And I too want to thank everybody previous to this for all of their help which assisted me in fixing the problem. I want to share what I did in case it might help someone else in the same situation: I had some data on my HDD that i really wanted to get at but kept arriving in a loop of bluescreens/reboots upon attempting to load. So i tried to get into the recovery console.. My comp wouldn't boot to the Windows XP installation disk from the CD for some reason, so I created floppy copies of it. After installing the data from the 6 floppy Windows XP installation disks, I ran the Recovery Console by pressing "R" after setup was complete. At the command prompt, I too couldn't use "dir." I then tried to run "chkdsk" (not "chkdsk /r" or "chkdsk /f", just "chkdsk"). But it was telling me that it couldn't find the file "AUTOCHK.EXE" So i loaded that file onto a floppy and again typed "chkdsk" at the C: prompt. It began running the chkdsk utility, which took under 10 minutes to run. At the end of the test it said that it found some errors. I decided to type "exit" and after the intro screen, I chose "Safe Mode" from the options, which got me back into the Windows GUI! I know that the best thing to do next would likely be to get the errors found in chkdsk alleviated but like i said the main concern was just getting at the data, which is being backed up at the moment! ! Thanks again to everyone for their help!!! |

Re: Missing or corrupt ntfs.sys(RESOLVED!!! an error occurred during directory enumeration
what felt like a TRAGEDY becomes a success story!) Okay, windows did not boot up, I was using NON-GUI boot, so I didn't see anything just a black screen , all I saw was my wireless light turn on, and the computer activity light blinking and my fan was loud a bit...tried rebooting, tried resetting BIOS to defaults... no good.. Cause: BIOS change? TuneXP?(I ran ultra fast boot..) Disabling some O&O Defrag from startup? or deltemp.bat (computer tweak which contains rd /s /q "C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Local Settings\History" rd /s /q "C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\History" rd /s /q "C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Local Settings\Temp" I am pretty sure it speeds up boot. ) (hope this helps someone... ) Steps to Resolution: Well I first of course tried (by pressing F8 during startup) and selecting safe mode, or last known good configuration but no use. In the recovery console on the XP Boot CD (I just shoved my xp cd in , hit f12 and selected boot from CD-ROM) I ran fixboot I ran fixmbr, then ran chkdsk in recovery console I tried dir (to list directories) "an error occurred during directory enumeration." THe recovery console did not even find c:\windows or anything ... (for others if dir actually works... and shows your files.. you can use the master-slave approach to save your data to another place OR --> tried a REPAIR INSTALLATION OF XP-- > OR ... try a new installation of XP BUT to a different directory... I use C:/WINDOWSX ... so when I installed fresh installation from XP I installed to C:\windows .. then eventually deleted that windows folder after fixing boot.ini to say C:\windowsX. Anyyways I ran chkdsk.. because obviously something was corrupt ... it was running and took quite awhile at 25% (and "performing additional checking" 3 times) so I said screw it. I will restart...same problem... After searching online I realized if I ever wanted to see my data again that CHKDSK will do it. So i ran the command: chkdsk /p /r (with my 120GB hard drive) from 10pm EST to about 2:27 am EST.. it said windows fixed one or more errors after it finally reached 100% Lesson: Let the damned chkdsk do its thing(after you run fixboot and fixmbr) and say goodbye to about 4 hours and 30 minutes of your life. Well it reached 75% went down to 60% and up to 100% and yay! windows was back. chkdsk /p /r saved me!!! (after it worked I scheduled a scandisk ...) and as a special reccomendation run PAGEDEFRAG ... its by microsoft... my c:\windows\config\system is in 11 fragments.,. maybe thats why it runs so slow.. so ya lets hope for the best. |

Re: Missing or corrupt ntfs.sysOK, none of you has addressed this issue to the extent that I need.
My main problem. NTFS.sys bsod and the file system is unknown and the drive crashes any machine it is plugged into...with the same NTFS.sys error. SO we know it is the drive.
The bottom line...I need the data off the drive. And it can not read the file system. Because NTFS.sys is gone. The only thing I can think of...is trying another Knoppix CD. Will let you know what I come up with. |
