For a full SUSE distro, it can end up being 1-2GB. But that's full of absolutely every piece of freeware that exists, with loads of crap.
I like RedHat, and can be found in around 400-600Mb, including most normal apps. I think it comes also in ISO format (is that the format) to burn directly to CD-R, which is really handy. Or do as I do, borrow a Linux book from your library & whip the CD at the back, much cheaper Linux can be great if all goes smoothly, which it usually does. But once a problem occurs, all that Windows experience goes out the window (forgive the pun), and you're ending up trying to recompile the kernel from command line, not an easy task for the newbie. Very few repair things exist. But once you get used to it, Linux is fantastic. Garth Farley |
