With my past experience with optomizing websites fro search engiens let me add in a few pointers. Yes use tags. They definatly help you with search engine spiders. Also use a site map. Site maps definatly also are a bonus.

Do NOT be disapointed if you do not get good ranking... Why? Well simply put unless your offering something completely unique that you think people are searching for you will not get with in the top 10 or 25 for that matter if your site is on something that is popular on the net.

It is a good idea to register anyway and get added as it does give some results. Also you should on all your forum posts post your sites (company) name and Website Link like I do under my signature. The more links to your site found on other sites or forums will increase your ranking as well.

If you want to be successfull you have to do it the hard way. Do NOT rely on search engines or you will not succeed. Dont spam e-mail either as that is a waste of money.

Advertise in your local area. Try posting in the news paper once a week ina 2x3 inch ad space. The common price for that size is about 30 dollars. Also online find forum communities that are along the same area or subject as your site and introduce yourself on them. Help people there and they will come to your site. Some boards have sections for advertising your services. These boards DO bring in HUGE results. Just make sure you follow the board rules and again DONT SPAM and DONT PM SPAM. Thats the best way to get a bad reputation and also to get removed from the boards. Again if your going to become apart of a community for the sake of increasing your traffice then BECOME apart of it. Help people out there and dont just think of your own services when posting responces or ideas.

Unfortunately this is completely UNTRUE on GIDForums™. Every link inside a forum message here is SO search engine UNFRIENDLY. Everything is unfriendly to search engine spiders except the links in your signature that you have to set up in your profile.

Yes some forums are nto compatible and you have to use it in your signature for best results ( Havent found how to edit mine yet ). But the rest holds true.

I am afraid you misunderstood me, every link inside a forum message on GIDForums™ (only), is deliberately converted into Javascript links. This is something I "hacked" into the script myself to minimise abuse and useless (short) replies to existing threads.

Getting quality links from websites with content similar or closely related to yours is a good point as well. Another place to be on the lookout is newsgroups. http://groups.google.com has a very nice web interface which allows posting on newsgroups.

Of course getting listed in as many web directories as possible under the correct category will definitely increase the traffic you get from search engines.

Even though my company's website is not ranked high (due to some major restructuring), most new customer registrations are referred from search engines. It is definitely important NOT to ignore the search engines and after all it is not just Google out there anymore.
