MySQL Adds Subselects, Upgrades Performance and Security

http://www.mysql.com/press/release_2003_05.html
Quote:
Subselects Add Advanced Querying Capabilities
MySQL Version 4.1 includes support for SQL subselects, also called subqueries or nested queries, a powerful feature that lets users search complex data with ease and efficiency. With subselects, users can achieve query consolidation by nesting one query inside another query, creating a resource otherwise unavailable for searching in a single statement. Subselects allow users to query within a result set, creatively limit the result set or correlate results with an otherwise unrelated query in a single call to the database.

Such features will definately put mySql up there with the big boys. But I can't say that the subselect feature has been in much demand, usually those with a good knowledge of SQL can easily get around this restriction.

Subselects take up more memory and server processing than equivalent multiple linked table selects. And I'm still not 100% happy with mySql's performance under load, especially compared with competitors like postgrsql.

Any sign of transaction support yet?

Funny, I was thinking the SAME thing... I do very well just using joins like I usually do.

But I suppose I am just used to it - so we will just have to see what this new stuff will do when we get to it.

In all fairness, I think MySQL is already 'one-of-the-big-boys'. MySQL 4 has been used by some webmasters already reporting considerably much better performance. It's just free, so people tend not to give it due respect.

For web-dev, certainly, mySql has it all wrapped up nicely, but for more commercial exploits like integration into software products or seriously big/popular e-shops, it's no match for heavy duty products like Oracle and M$' Jet engines.

But certainly it's a whole lot nicer on the pocket

Butit's general opinion that mySql doesn't cope very well under heavy load, hopefully something that's being addressed. Hence it's good for smaller webventures.

Actually, I have aplans to write an MMORPG which is going to use MySQL as the backend for storing all user and world realted info. It's easy to scale and keep updated and is also easy to interface with C/C++ which the server will be written in on a Linux box...
