Fresh install of win 2KHi
I need to uninstall my windows 2k and everything else to do a fresh install. Can anyone give me any pointers as I believe it can be a bit tricky? Jxx ![]() |

Well, all I can say is have all drivers at hand before you mess around, especially the modem/network card. Also take note of all setting you'll miss, dial-up-networking stuff, address book, email account details, those little things you'll miss.
Also have a win98 boot disk handy, should you need to play about with the partition table. Are you confident you know what to do? Booting from the install CD should allow you to do all you need. GF |

Don't forget your browser bookmarks. I've lost 3 generations of them over time because I forgot to back them up.

win 2K reinstallQuote:
Thanks for the tips, never thought about outlook or my favourites - have backed them up! What way do you suggest that I uninstall - is there a command prompt that would make sure that my hard drive is clean or is their a windows uninstall function that woudl be good enough? Jxx |

It's been a while since I've done this, so someone correct me if I misspeak.
One of the easiest methods is use a boot disc (floppy or CD; you can use the Windows CD also). If you don't use the WinCD, change to the drive where Windows is (usually C: ) and run a complete format, not a quick. I've noticed that if I do a quick format, the data is still there (obviously) so when I install apps, the settings are what I left them as. This can be good if you're lazy, but it also means that you aren't getting rid of whatever problems you may have. If you're using the WinCD, just follow the menus to reformat the drive. After you format it, use the WinCD to do a reinstall. I recommend a custom install, that way you can eliminate many things that you don't use but take up space. If you're truly paranoid or want to make doubly sure your drive is clean, you can get a "drive cleaner" program that will overwrite the drive w/ 1's and 0's making it impossible to get anything off it. When you install Windows, it will truly be a clean install. __________________
