Processor fan...spins real fast, then lag spikes

I have a 2.8 ht processor, and when running certain programs, the fan over the prossesor will spin real fast where u can hear it clearly and then all of a sudden it just stops spinning, and when it stops i recieve a lag spike. This occurs about every minute or so for a few minutes and will then randomly occur again at times Any hardware fix suggestions?...Bios or software suggestions?

I've personally never seen or heard of this problem before. I would think that you maybe have a bad fan. I know that if the fan is connected to the motherboard that the computer will monitor the RPM's of the fan but I don't think that there is any software that controls the fan.

Some mobo's come w/ fan monitoring software. If you installed it, it could be trying to adjust the fan speed. If it stops spinning though, I think you have serious problems.

Other things to consider is a bad power supply, bad power from mobo to fan, or power line surges. You could try a line conditioner/UPS, but no guarantees. You could try a new fan; if it's a sleeve-bearing fan, the bearing could be wearing out. If you get a new one, make sure it's a ball-bearing model.

For those who care to know, there is actually a free program called Speed Fan that will monitor and adjust fan speeds automatically. Really cool program, it will even monitor hard drive temps. Check it out. http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

I'd have to agree here, check the output of the PSU and the fan connector on the board. A stopping fan is not a good thing, it should never stop. Some cases have external fans that come on only when needed but those are usually connected to third party cooling system.
