PROGRAM.exe missingI get message windows that tell me that Drive C needs PROGRAM.exe. How/where do I look for it? I've done the Start/Find thing, but I can't find it in files and folders or Computer. I used the System Restoration disk, but nada. Same thing with the Windows 98 disk.......... What do I do now? Please help me! My Gateway is doing everything very slowly, too.

Heh, Gateway
The actual message is "program.exe"? That's pretty generic. Apart from running slow, are there any other problems? If all you get is the error message, but everything seems to work fine, then don't panic. Windows likes to pop up error messages, but many times they don't mean very much. You can check the GW site and see if their tech support page has a listing of your error message; it could be something w/ your model of system, or at least a known issue. Regarding the slowness issue, what are your system specs and which version of Win98 do you have (1st or 2nd edition)? Have you defragged recently? Have you checked for spyware/adware/viruses? Do you have a lot of programs running concurrently or at startup? As a general rule of thumb, Windows should be reinstalled clean about once a year; XP doesn't have as many problems so I don't normally recommend it for that version. 95, 98, and ME have issues w/ the Registry. Over time it gets "corrupted" as entries are made, deleted, and moved. This can lead to a slow system (among other problems). That's why a reformat/reinstall is recommended every so often. __________________

"Windows cannot find PROGRAM.exe"Thanks for a prompt response.....
I've done all you've suggested, that's why I asked for help here. I can't even connect with Microsoft for a computer checkup OR with Aol for their computer checkup, and I suppose because of the missing file. I can't defrag, either..nor does my Norton Antivirus connect completely. It worked for a short time, and it did find some corrupt files and got rid of them. I'm at my wits' end......what a headache. My brother-in-law thought that he did me a favor when he installed Spyware and Adaware several weeks ago--that's when everything went kaput. Norton AV warned me to delete them right away. I even lost the sound. Oh, and he also added a memory strip for me. Wonder if he screwed up the sound when he did that. So much for HIS help.........LOL. The Gateway support site didn't even bother to respond to my concerns. Guess this is my first AND my last Gateway........ Thanks, again. |

I found a few web sites that talk about "program.exe", but not knowing what your actual error message is, I can't point you at one. Two of them are related to browsing, one related to a virus. You get the idea. You may try reformatting the drive and reinstalling Windows. It sucks but 90% of the time it fixes all problems. __________________
