CD drives...they read to fast then idles?!?!?!??!

I have a brand new hp computer (not the best brand) and i am having problems with the cd drives, one is a 300c all in one drive and the other is an asus regular cd drive...when i try to play games in either drive the cd will read very fast, and then just stop, and when it stops it causes a lag blip. And this occurs like every 2 minutes or so, my cds have absolutely no scratches on them (it only does this with games)...there are no updated drivers for these drives and my specs are a 2.8ht processor, 64mb nvidia, 512 ddr, and the max read speed for the all in one is 16x, the regular drive is 40x. Both the drives speeds up very fast, like to much, then just idles totally...any thoughts? i have no clue what could be causing this, thanx in advanced for any help

Can you hear the CD-ROM's spin down before this happens? If so then try and install a games max install so there not much on the CD and see if this helps, Also make sure that your computer meets the requirements for the games your installing.

Please let me know if any of this helps.

Some random things that come to mind:
Has your computer got lots of other hardware installed? Are you sure the Power Supply can handle all?
Is there any Power Saving features activated? For instance HDs spin down when idle, does a CD stop completely?
Is the HD & CD share an EIDE connection? Try switching the CD to the other connector, so they're not maxing out one interface.
