Thumbs up

hello all!! newbie to the GIDforums

hi all, just thought i would come over and say hello. would like to get involved with the site. i originally joined to get some help with FLTK. you can go over to that link to see what my problem was. i realize however a lot if not most of you have ever dealt with it.

anyway i live in Mississippi, got my BS in Computer Science & Math Minor. Also did some post graduate work. i started learning openGL a couple of years ago and love it. been programming in C++ about 5 - 6 years if you count all the programming in school. jumped aboard the OOP route about halfway through. i have also picked up a 3-D modeling and animation package called Maya and am really loving it! (finding nemo anyone?) Maya was used in making all the models in that movie. also i am writing my own game using C++ and OpenGL w/GLUT interaction(this way it will be portable). i love college football and get all into it. also i like to game online(naturally) and love to cook, run, workout and eat, sleep, heh :-D

please tell me about yourself and what your goals/plans are. where is everyone else from?

Hello again, usmsci.

I am glad that you dropped by here and am really glad that you posted in the FLTK forum. It is brand new and hopefully will grow a bit.

I had to respond to your college football comment. I am more of an NFL fan myself, but I do enjoy the college ranks quite a bit as well. This year especially as my alma matter has nearly cracked the top 10 (Utah). We generally field a decent team but are not considered a power house by any means. Unfortunately our schedule is pretty light weight and it may be difficult to get into a BCS bowl even if we finish the year undefeated. But it is fun to watch...

Anyway, hope to see you around.

hehe yeah dsmith my beloved alma mater is Southern Miss! we play #7 Cal Dec 4th. it was scheduled for a couple of thursday nights ago on ESPN but b/c of hurricane ivan it was postponed.. :-?

well it might work out in the end. it would be cool for both of us to be undefeated when that game rolls around. Southern Miss is currently #26 in the AP Poll and we should blow out Houston at home this thursday night on ESPN 2 at 6 pm if you would like to watch. you can look out for me.. i will be the one all painted up .. heh. you guys killed us in the LIberty Bowl last year. we played poorly , our worst game all year.. but you guys played better. heres to revenge!

I was going to say something about that but I didn't want to gloat. Wins over quality programs like Southern Miss have been few and far in between for Utah.

I will definitely be watching both the duece and ESPN on thursday night. I am hoping that Clemson can pull off a miracle win over Virginia as well. I will definitely be pulling for Southern Miss though as well.

Good luck. I'll talk to you more as Dec. 4th rolls around...

Hello usmsci,

Welcome to GIDForums™.

We just recently opened the FLTK forum here on GIDForums™. dsmith is a fan... in case you haven't already noticed it yet!

I am not in the IT field at all (like you) but I really like learning and there's nothing else quite like computers and programming. All I need is a PC, an Internet connection and BAM!... I've got the whole "manual" (WWW) to do what I want.

American Football? Never figured it out....

hey JDS.. what dont you understand about American Football? maybe we can set up a sports section in here so people can understand. at first i can see where it can seem hard to understand but its really not that bad!

and we barely pulled out one against houston dsmith -- now ranked #24 but we play bama this weekend and we never win there. :-x

anyway i have some FLTK stuff i got to work and ill post that over at the FLTK section soon..

Hey usmsci. I've been waiting to hear from you.

Your win over Houston was less than impressive, but it is a win and it got you all in the top 25! I think So. Miss. can take the Crimson Tide as well this year. Bama isn't what they generally are. Again, I'll be pulling for Southern Miss.

The good news for both of our teams was N.C. beating N.C. State. It opened up the 25 for Southern Miss. and it helps Utahs strength of schedule a bit. We need all the help that we can get, as our remaining schedule doesn't have any big time programs in it...

I've been meaning to hit up pcxgamer about this game (he's from So. Carolina), but I am not sure if he is too much into College Ball.

As for the non-interest in American Football, I can totally understand that. I spent several years in Argentina and I was totally immersed in World Football (Soccer). I thought that I would always be a huge fan of it. But once I came back to the US, I lost all interest in it entirely. It just doesn't generate excitement in the US. Just like American Football doesn't generate alot of excitement outside the borders... Thats my take on it at least.

Good luck this weekend!

BTW - I am a bigger NFL fan (as you should be able to tell by my avatar). This week the Steelers take on the ultimate evil in the NFL - the Cowboys. I am surrounded by Cowboys fans at work and it is so annoying. Any Cowboys fans on here?

well what you have to realize is that Houston has given some teams fits this season. they put up 13 points on the might Miami Hurricanes with their unorthodoxed offense. plus if you watched that game the refs were absolutely horrible, the worst officiating ever. that at LEAST game them 7 poitns maybe even 10 points and cost us from scoring at least 7 so that turns the table right there. so while we made mistakes, the refs helped them out even more. maybe this was a wake up call for us. i hope so.

dsmith summed it all very nicely, there's simply no interest in American Football where I live. So, I never really made an effort to figure it out.

As for setting up a Sports Section here on GIDForums™, I will do that gladly if that is what you guys want. I just started this forum, you (the community, as a whole) decide where it's going. If there are at least 3 threads discussing sports, I can set up a new forum category within a few clicks. So, let me know...
