Postfix and Fedora Core 1

Does anyone know about setting up users in Postfix (Fedora Core 1)?

Up to this point, I have the service running on the new VDS and I can retrieve emails sent to root->gidnetwork.com and user_name->gidnetwork.com

I am stuck trying to set up individual mail boxes such as some_other_username->gidnetwork.com etc.

Of course I have read most of the materials found on the Internet from searching Google for the topic.

replace "->" with "@".

This may be a rather dumb reply, but does the simple command of "adduser" or "useradd" not work?

(Disclaimer: not a redhat user :-) )

No, not a dumb reply at all.

With this new VDS, I don't really need to create all those (linux) local users for each domain like I used too. This time I just create ONE user, e.g. I set up the username "jay" to login via SSH to the server.

So, my web docs for each domain is set up like this:

/home/jay/domains/gidnetwork.com/html
/home/jay/domains/gidwebhosts.info/html

etc...

So, it's clear that I have just one real user... but I want to set up multiple mailboxes for gidnetwork.com. Surely I don't need to create individual linux users for that?

Not a dumb reply, just a misunderstanding of the original question..

Once again, I am not an expert, but if you want mail accounts for people, I don't think there is any way to do this without adding them as a user. What you want to do though is add them as a restricted (very restricted) account. You should probably make a seperate group for these users.

Let me get into the the VDS that this forum is on right now and I'll see if the many mailboxes that I created for the desilva.biz domain is set up as real linux users (as you suggest). I'll post again with my findings...

Nope, it doesn't seem like that's how it's setup on this server. I'll have to dig around some more and try to figure out how WHM/CPanel does it; though I think they're not using Postfix as the MTA.

I think this document will help.
http://www.postfix.org/VIRTUAL_READM...irtual_mailbox

you will have to edit some files when you add a (new) domain or mailboxes, but it allows you to collect all mail from user_name->example.com in /var/mail/vhosts/example.com/mail/user_name

and if i'm correct, you are looking for this

Thank you Allowee, but like I said, I've read most of the materials on the subject (including obviously the ones on postfix.org itself).

I don't blame you for thinking I have not; I realise now that my question was not accurate and that is because I don't really understand how everything works together... yet!

I did some reading on this subject and now I think, I've narrowed it down to a few more details that I hadn't even thought about yesterday. PostFix is the MTA. I think now I need a POP3/IMAP server to handle authenticating / login / retrieve / send users' email to their own mailboxes? Am I close yet?

I am currently looking at Cyrus-SASL and how it ties in with what I want to do...

I already thought that you would have seen those docs, but wasn't sure.

Because you already started with a nameserver I figured you would know about smtp/pop3. the smtp part is done, pop3/imap is for now, like you said.

a tip i can give you is the use of `netstat -ntap` and `telnet localhost port` for testing if the server is listening and working.

good luck

I regret to inform everybody who replied to this thread, some people I contacted over IM (to discuss this) and anybody finding this thread, that I have decided to give this all up and just go with a hosting control panel.

I am wasting too much time, I was getting impatient and I really want to launch gnetwork sometime this year
