http compression with gzip

Hi, i just finished using that gzip test created by jds and its really neat.

www.gidnetwork.com/tools/gzip-test.php

How would i go about finding this info myself. Is there a *nix utility like "wget" to find out how much of data was downloaded before its uncompressed.

If u need some clarification, just ask, i hope u understand me. Basically i'm just trying to figure out how he did that. Found out the compression ratio, etc. He doesn't happen to have this open source does he.

Hello section31,

Thank you for your feedback.

To answer your question; no, this script is not open source nor available as a download, at this time. I may change my mind in the future... you never know

Is this just an approximation. I mean, did u just download the file then just gzip it yourself or is there some other method where u can get the exact file size of the contents downloaded. I know u can tell if its gzipped or not by the headers, but i have no idea how u got the ratio.

Sorry section31, I just realised that I didn't completely answer your questions.

No I do not use "wget" to get the document. I use "fsockopen" to read the file in, then process it just as a browser would. If a document is compressed, then I receive the compressed version and download another copy without compression and compare the two. <-- That is what it does nowadays.

The newer script I have been sitting on for more than a year (iow, NOT uploaded yet) can do both (and more) all at the same time.
