Does .NET Plot Graphs?

I need to figure out a way to use .NET to create a program that will plot a sine wave. Is this an easy task for .NET to handle? Using VB 6.0, I could find no easy answer, so I gave up and bought Visual Studio .NET which seems to have answers for everything.

Many Thanks In Advance!

Do you mean like plotting in a picture control? There is an example on how to do this in VB.NET here

Did I mention I'm an absolute idiot when it comes to VB? :-D

Oh, yeah, .NET is magic

Best regards,

Thanks LuciWiz for that example. I'll check it out. What would you use in C++ for plotting? VB .NET is probably compatible with the same library, if you know of one.

I suppose using a Picture Object would be okay. Whatever I use, it will be far better than the original DOS version of this product. My job is to convert it over to a Windows application - fun.

Oh no! There's always time to pick it up - its part of .NET, so why not? You can implement some applications in VB much faster than Visual C++, or C#, I believe. The code may not run as fast, but it holds its own.

Thanks for the helpful response!

Oh, I don't have anything against VB, ikt's just that my experience with it is rather short. However, I do think that when it comes to building a really big project, it's code tends to become unmatainable - maybe it depends on the developer's skills

Well, I guess you mean what I would use in C++.NET? Hm, let me make a small statement here:
  • if you would compile unmanaged code - then you definetely use MFC; if you are interested in this part, I could tell very much about it (I mistakenly tend to consider myself some kind of expert when it comes to developing MFC- based animations).
  • Anyway, I'm quite sure what you are looking for is a solution using WinForms (since this is "managed code" - compatible with VB and C#). So, I guess my answer would be to use the MSChart Control (it is an ActiveX control and this will probably slow down your app).

However, I think this control better suits your job (it's up to you).

Best regards,
Luci

Ah, MFC - sounds great! It sounds like something I would rather use, instead of the MSChart control, which I'm trying to avoid. I'll just have to look up some information now to see what this MFC is all about. Thanks! I'll post some more questions about it in a bit.

Hi LuciWiz!

I decided to use C# for my solution. I compared example code that I found for both VB .NET and C# and found C# to be more elegant for utilizing GDI+. It also looks very simple to program with - similar to my favorite language of PHP, which is of course similar to C++ - also a favorite.
