Nvidia Geforce FX 5600 ultra Problem

I purchaced a new Nvidia Geforce FX 5600 ultra 256M DDR Vga card the other day . Came new in the box with the driver CD. I kill the power to the Comp, unplug it, ground to the comp frame, remove the old GeForce 2 and install the new 5600. After installation, I turn the comp back on. After the Initial boot log is complete, the windows loading screen pop's up and about 1/2 way through the operation the graphic's start to fall apart. when the comp finely gets to the desk top, the graphic's are all a mess. there are 3 pointers, and nothing is desernable. everywhere I move the pointer, it drags the image around with it. everything on the screen is a series of nondiscript, unorganized, jumbled up mess of squares the used to ge the desktop view. Looks like snippets of different images. about 500 of them. and the driver disk wont boot.
Any suggestions?

I am running the following sys.
2 AMD athlon 1600 Procceser's.
Tyan MP S2460 Mother board.
Windows 2000 pro
Macron MPT-400 power supply

What comes to mind here is that you may be having a heating problem, I know that it may seem a little fast for the card to over heat, but normally corrupted graphic's on-screen mean that the card is over heating, and with dual AMD's CPUs I would say it a safe bet that they are already creating a lot of heat and when you add the ultra 5600 into the mix it may have been to much. In your Bios setting there may be a option in there that says PC health or something maybe this will display your CPU and System temps try looking there first before windows has a change to load and just see how hot it getting.

Then you have two options if you can see the temp from the bios first would be to reinstall the old Geforce card and then in windows check the temp of the CPU and System but this of course won't tell you if there ultra is overheating. The second is to open the case and place a large fan beside the PC and blow a large amount of air into the pc this may help keep if cool long enough for you to check the temp on the card, I'm not totally sure if the card has a temp display my 5600 non-ultra does, if you right click on the desktop and go to Properties and then setting then Advanced then there should be a tab with the name of the card on it look there first. This may different for you has you run 2000 and I'm running XP Pro but I would think so. Try these things and let me know if any of this helps

Geforce 5600 Grafix freeze prob

yo, i have a Tornado Geforce 5600 FX, and im having prob wiv it. when im playing a game like BF1942, or NHL 2004, it runs really nicely. But, at random time the grafix freeze for a moment, and i think that the comp has crashed. but, when it un freezes, the game continues, but there blocks of grafik missing. like in NHL 2004, people are sk8in, wiv blocks of there body missin. i hapens on all my games, i dunno what to do. i have the nun 61.77 drivers. 9.0c. all that i should need. ive tried installing previous versions of drivers, but its not happening. ive checked my BIOS, and my computer is running at really cool temps, i dunno what to do

Which temps is your BIOS monitoring? Usually it only checks core CPU temp, though some can monitor other things. If it is heat related, the slot where your video card is may not be able to pass enough cool air to the GPU.

One quick way to check is take the case off and run the system. If it works, then it's most likely an air circulation problem; when the case is on there may not be enough air flow through out the case to keep your video card from overheating.

In addition to making sure your card's fan is working, you could consider adding more case fans or getting an active cooling system like a liquid cooler or peltier system.
