I aquired a PC 3 years ago thought I was only going to use to write a few letters, Internat and Email, but you know what it's like one thing leads to another, digital camera and other programs etc.

I know I have 152MB memory and a 20? HD, think that is correct.

I often get a message 'Disc space low' so i do the clean up and it's Ok for a while.

If I buy more RAM memory will this help or is it the Hard Drive (can you tell I know nothing yet)

Also I would like a CD RW/DVD, only to copy photos, does anyone have any recommendations, I think it will have to be an external one as looking at the instructions for internal, kind of frightened me.

If the message is "disc space low" then you either need a new/additional hard drive or need to clean it out. Get rid of software you don't need or use very often and move files to a CD when you get a burner.

Your memory is a little on the low side for nowadays, so you might want to upgrade your RAM. This will help cut down on the size of your virtual memory on the HD and you'll spend less time swapping data to it.

Pretty much any external drive you should be happy with. Just make sure you computer is compatible (USB vs. Firewire, etc.). Plextor, Yamaha, and Sony make pretty good ones. If you want comparisons, try Tom's Hardware Guide, AnandTech, or PC World.

Thanks for your reply, I'll definately get some more memory.

Once I get a CD RW I can get the photos on to it so shouldn't get any low disk space messages

Just as an example which programs/files do you generally put on to CD?

Photos, compressed music (mp3, wma, ogg, etc.), documents, backup of important files, small video files, etc. Pretty much anything that you don't use often, is important enough for a backup, or doesn't need to be easily accessed.
