Email ProblemsHello
We have just upgraded to broadband in the office and are sharing a connection via router. We use pop3 email - 1 account with freeserve eg 'ourcharity.freeserve.co.uk but we have standard email variations eg bob@ourcharity.freeserve.co.uk & mailbox@ourcharity.freeserve.co.uk. Since the change over we can only send emails from accounts ending 'ourcharity.freeserve.co.uk' to our co workers accounts eg ending 'ourcharity.freeserve.co.uk . We are receving external email to these accounts fine and we can send emails from our personal pop3 accounts eg hotmail onthe same internet connection? Any thoughts anybody? Help very much appreciated |

Sorry Janey, I am not replying with a solution to your problem.
I am just concerned that by posting valid (real) email addresses like those in your message, you will be exposing these email addresses to the spam bots that roam these forum pages regularly. Why don't you edit them to use generic, example domain names like example.com instead? |

Hi Thanks, but the 'ourcharity' bit isn't real it substituted our email name for that and also mailbox & bob don't really exist, but thanks its good to know people are looking out for you!

Some routers try to be clever. It could have a mailserver installed, that forwards incoming mail to your network, but it isn't configured to send outgoing mail (it'd need freeserve's outgoing mailserver address & an account/password).
This would explain how internal mail works anyway. And the router is new. What brand/model is it? Does it have a manual which mentions anything like this? Does the manual say you've to change the configuration of your email programs at all? Hope this helps GF |

Thanks Gareth, I thought i had solved the problem as I hadn't changed the outgoing server on the email accounts - this worked on my win 2000 notebook anyway.
However, when i put exactly the same settings into a win xp desktop it wouldn't work, the test coudln't contact incoming or outgoing server although the PC was deffo receving a signal as I was able to browse the web??? Any thoughts?? Well in answer to your question we are using 3com firewall router - we have configured the log on settings for the new broadband provider, so we havn't put the mailbox managers log-in details in (our old freeserve dial-up). I did just have a looka the router settings and I can't find anwhere to put mail server details, in I don;t think it has one, it certainly wasn;t sold as havign a mail server (costs about £70). My win 2k notebook that works anyway is on a cable. We have a win xp home notebook with a PCMCIA card (3com again) which is working fine but the XP desktop using a (3com wireless usb- signal 'good') ethernet is the one that just won;t seem to work. Thank you!!! Jane |

On the XP system, can you ping the incoming & outgoing server addresses? In case you don't understand me, PING is a way of testing the connection between your PC & a remote computer. You run it from a command line, so do Start->Run & type "cmd" without the quotes.
Then type (where mail.freeserve.com is the incoming mail server address): ping mail.freeserve.com If you get some numerical data, then it's good. If you get "Request Timed Out" then something is in the way. Try disabling the XP firewall if it's enabled. Does the router have a firewall? Did the laptop connected to the router work, but the XP computer didn't? GF |

Thanks Garth!!
Tried the pinging, through the command prompt as suggeted just said pinging was unable to find server. So do you i think it could be the XP firewall settings then? We also have some Pencillin virus software on the pc do you think this could adding to the problems as well? On another note we have found that on the same problem xp computer, the email account settings are reset to default when we boot up grrrrrrrrr, any ideas here. We will keep playing anyway and let you know if we sort anything out . Ta Jxx |
