CD burner will not burn, new problem

I have a frustrating problem that just recently started. My cd-burner will not burn cd's. It starts no problem gets to 9% and then stops. The resulting cd has nothing on it but is closed to further burning.

I am running windows 2000 with update 4, p3, 500mb RAM
CD comes up as being LITE-ON LTR-24102b
Drivers are cdrom.sys, redbook.sys, storprop.sys in the winnt/system32 directory.

The cd burner has been working fine, no problems then all of a sudden...

I ran virus check - nothing.

I tried using music match to burn cd's, that is what gets to 9% complete. Prior to that I was using nero with no problems (nero would only get to 3% then freeze)

?????

Here's a list of things to consider:
Can it still read CD's? Does it have an issue w/ CD-RW's or just CD-R's? Are you having an issue w/ data cd's or music, or both?

Did anything happen to your system prior to it crapping out (install/upgrade sw, install hardware, etc.)? Are the CD driver's Windows or from LITE-ON? Are they current? Have you changed media brand?

Is the burn buffer running out during the burn? Does it have this problem when nothing else is running?

Normally things don't just crap out (though we are talking about Windows ;-)). I remember having this problem many years ago w/ Win98, but I don't remember what the solution was.

Not to sound like a zealot, but can you get a copy of Linux-on-CD, like Knoppix or similar? If you can boot from CD, then you can see if you can burn a disc using Linux. If it works, then you can eliminate a hardware issue and concentrate on a Windows problem.

Re: CD burner will not burn, new problem

Maybe a corrupt CD/DVD Driver perhaps??

Why don't you try removing the Upper and Lower Filters and Restarting the machine..This should re-install your cd burner drivers.

A complete guide can be found here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us

Quote:
Step 1: Start Registry Editor
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. Registry Editor starts.

Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry
1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
3. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
5. In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters.

Note An UpperFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the UpperFilters registry entry, you must click UpperFilters and not UpperFilters.bak.

6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the UpperFilters registry entry:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The UpperFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey.

Note Do not exit Registry Editor. You must have this program for the next step.

Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry
5. In the right pane (topic area), click LowerFilters.

Note An LowerFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the LowerFilters registry entry, you must click LowerFilters and not LowerFilters.bak.

6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the LowerFilters registry entry:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The LowerFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey.
8. Exit Registry Editor.

Step 4: Restart the computer

Re: CD burner will not burn, new problem

As you mentioned that you can't burn CDs any more but you haven't mentioned that is there any problem with reading the CDs. As you have not mentioned it we consider it to be working fine and address to your urgent need. This type of symptoms indicate that drivers you are using are not appropriate. Go for reinstalling your CD-Burning software. If this does not solve your problem call a technician and replace the lens of your CD Drive.
