Newbie problem with ApacheHi,
Pardon this very elementary question, but I have been trying to figure this one out from other posts and pages on the web...I'd really appreciate it if someone could answer this. I registered a domain name last week and have been trying to set Apache up to serve pages that I would like to be associated with that domain name. I've got Apache set up to where it serves the pages when I type http://localhost However, when I type in "http://www.<mydomainname>.com" the pages are not seen. I changed Servername to <mydomainname.com> What am I doing wrong...could somebody please point the mistake out and what I can do to correct it? Thanks! |

You have to include more details in your question for members to understand exactly what you're asking. For example, are you setting up your own web server? Is this for your own PC (for development purposes etc). OS? Linux or Windows or something else?

Sorry about that.
My attempt is to set up my own web server. I don't want to pay for hosting as my site content is still in an experimental stage and I'm unsure of the time I will have to dedicate to that...it will be a work in progress for quite a while. I'm running Apache 2.0 and my OS is Windows XP Pro. Thanks! |

I guess one of the key steps I'm missing has to do with DNS.
I looked at http://www.dyndns.org and they offer free Dynamic and Static DNS services, but one has to use their domain names. They also offer Custom DNS but it costs $24.95 for an year. I have a Dynamic IP address. My internet connection is via cable modem. What do you think I should do? |

Are you sure that running a server is not a TOS violation of your cable provider? I'd be surprised if it's not. I think your best bet is to research free Web hosts, find one that you are comfortable with, and be done with it. This may require you to accept some form of on-page advertising (that's how they keep it free). |
