No Sound

My sounds card is built into the motherboard by Dell - using SoundMax. I tried to install a USB camera Friday night - that did not work & then my sound was gone. I have this incessant little computer beep for everything now.

I did the roll-bak thru Windows. Nothing. Re-installing, etc does not help. I then re-booted once & went thru the command prompts & did a roll-back. Well that went a bit differently. It then told me that the drivers were corrupted. So I re-downloaded from Dell. Still the same problem. Did a SFC & then the sound card installed. But no sound.

Thru the sound - it says no audio device. The BIOS is correct as well. Anything that I have missed? (Using Windows XP Pro - no service pack)

Right-click My Computer, select the Hardware tab & click the Device Manager button. Your sound card will probably have a bright yellow error icon in front of it.

Try removing the device, and reinstalling the SoundMax driver then.

You may also see remenants of the camera, best remove them too.

Thanks. No - no little exclamation mark or anything. It says it is working fine. When I know it isn't. I did one roll back (again) and had the exclamation mark & then did an SFC - got rid of the exclamation mark - but still no sound

Bizarre! Forgive me for stating obvious suggestions, but I've done more stupid things!

Sound turned up? Right-click the speaker icon in the stay beside your clock, and click Open Volume Controls. Anything muted? Right-click again on the icon, but select the other option this time. Have you a Sound Playback device listed? Is it one you recognise?

Try opening Windows Media Player & play a generic sound file. It's usually very sharp at detecting if your soundcard isn't installed correctly.

Have you plugged in your speakers/headphones in the correct jack? Do you hear that crack noise when you turn on your PC & the speakers are plugged in? They wouldn't be USB speakers?

Did you try removing the Sound Card from the device manager & reinstalling it? That can often help a lot.
Any other details you can give us to help?

There are no volume controls - since I guess because no dio device listed in my sounds (Under control panel).

In there, it has default device for Sounds playback (greyed out). The sound recording is SoundMax Digital Audio. In the MIDI music, the default device is Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth.

Under Voice, no voice playback (greyed). The Voice recording is SoundsMax Digital Audio.

I have removed it several times - we have re-installed it several different ways. It is a Dell but not covered because I upgraded to the new OS (XP Pro) without their knowledge.

Playing a movie - the video plays. When playing an MP3:
Quote:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.
My roommate has the exact same set-up. Everything matches. Even the size of the drivers. We have compared everything. I want to either get a new sound card (which he says might cause more problems) or just re-format. And I just did do that about 6 months ago :-/

Thanks!

No Sound

This may sound dumb, but if your system audio has different settings for speaker types (laptop, desktop, mono, stero etc) - check to see if yours is set for your system setup. I get a similar error message when my sound goes out. My laptop sometimes likes to reset to a desktop with external speakers. When I reset to the proper configuration, the sound is fine.

To be honest, I was stumped. There must've been something gone AWOL.
You've it sorted out now though?

Yes - thanks Nothing that a totlal new HD / re-format won't fix. LOL. I had just reformatted in January - so I was trying to wait at least a year, but no sound was infuriating! Scary how those little things we just really take advantage of
