Slot 1 CPU UpgradeI have a system:
MOBO: Lucky Star 6vabx2 ver: 2.0 (5*PCI, 2*ISA, 1*AGP, 2*USB); chipset: VIA VT82c693; I have a Pentium III CPU - 500 MHz (SLOT 1) and 128 SDRAM. I want to upgrade my CPU and I want to know how far I can go. According to what I found on the Internet, my VIA chipset supports 450MHz CPU`s and above. I want to find out what "above" means. My MOBO automatically detects cpu voltage. In BIOS I have the following options: CPU multiplyer can be automatically detected up to 6.5x100 (now it is set to automatic: 5x100). My FBS frequencies could be 100 or 133. Multiplyer can go up to 8x. I have a problem: What is the ultimate SLOT 1 PENTIUM CPU that could work with my system? Can I try a 1.1 GHz Pentium 8x133 (this seems to be the limit for SLOT 1 INTEL processors)? |

I think if you want to upgrade, the best possible P3 is the "Pentium 3 coppermine 1Ghz EB." Anything better than that is either in a socket format, or is rare (1130). If you can find a 1130, it will just be a 1.1Ghz on your computer. You can also get a "slotket." This allows you to use a newer socket CPU in a slot MB. __________________

One of these days a buddy of mine is going to bring me a slotket (with a 600MHz Pentium CPU). I can`t wait to test it!!! I`ve looked for cpu`s above 600 MHz but here, in Romania, it`s a little bit hard to find better CPU`s (Slot 1, I mean). I think they still keep them inside their systems.

The one thing to do when upgrading older machines is do a quick check on prices of brand new motherboards and CPUs. I have found that sometimes it can be cheaper (and faster) to do a real upgrade than to find these specialized slotket type of options.

Yeah... You can get a motherboard (socket A) and an old Duron for almost nothing and it will be way better than what you've got now... And with socket A boards, you can upgrade to any recent processor. If your friend is simply giving you this slotket with a pentium for free, I would go with that. __________________

Thank you again! I think I shall buy a better motherboard. I was thinking that a small step would be cheaper. Anyway, my friend`s adapter does not fit in my case because of the power supply. There is nothingh I can do. I couldn`t even test it. The adapter provided by Power Leap (I mean the one that can go up to 1.4 GHz - Tualatin) costs quite a fortune. I mean for that money I could buy a 2.5 GHz Intel system.
Thank you again. |
