Apache as localhost serverSituation: I have a shared drive on my PC on which I have installed and have working Apache/PHP/MySQL. All of the files for Apache/PHP/MySQL reside on this shared drive. When I connect to http://localhost I can use all of my PHP/MySQL apps and navigate my site as normal. I want others who have this shared drive on their PC to be able to connect to Apache on this shared drive and use the site accordingly. Is this possible?

As a followup, how does Apache know to intercept a request when a user types 127.0.0.1 or http://localhost and direct the user to the local site?

Basically, yes. There is a computer somewhere within our company which I don't have physical access to that has a drive that everyone in my office shares. It shows up as drive M:\ on everyone's pc and it has spreadsheets, word docs, etc. I have made a small PHP/MySQL app for use in our office to track sales that I would like to use on this shared drive for everyone to use. I installed Apache/PHP/MySQL on my machine and put all of the files for them on the M:\ drive thinking that anyone would be able to access them there. When I type http://localhost it pulls up on my browser and works correctly. When I try do that from someone else's computer in my office it doesn't work, which I think makes sense to me now. What I would like is for someone to be able to type in http://localhost or some other virtual host name and have it direct the browser to the apache service on this shared drive and use my app if that's possible. Any ideas?

typing http://localhost on other computers won't work.
they will need to use your ip address from the computer that runs apache. I forgot how to find that under Windows, but I'm sure it was something with ipconfig, but again , I'm not sure. for virtual hostnames you need to edit the HOSTS file on every computer. It should be in the windows directory and an example should also be included.. atleast that was on my Windows 98 install |
