Which server should I choose?

Hi,

I am stuck, really stuck... Not sure which server to choose. I am looking for a Windows server, and have come accross these;

- oneandone's Windows server
- Giacom's Netserver

I like the pricing of oneandones, but a friend informed me about search engine problems...

I am a complete novice, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

regards

Do you really need a dedicated server? If you are a novice, you could start off with cheaper shared hosting or if you know you'll need a server, look for a managed solution. You can read about the most common hosting types here.

And what is this "search engine problems" that your friend told you about exactly? This is the first time I am hearing about such a consideration.

JdS- Only thing I could think of would be that they have a lot of servers that easily get blacklisted. Once they do, some ISPs will stop traffic. I am sure it screws up SEs too. But who knows for sure? Not me

Btw, if you provide links to what you are talking about, it makes it easier for people to compare the two.

We run Sage system here, that can be accessed via the internet - I am told thats why we need one...

My friend told me about oneandone being based in germany, and this causes problems with ranking on search engines...

Giacom informed me that they have UK datacentre, but their prices are slightly higher than oneandones.....

ARgh!

This is news to me, honestly! I didn't realise that having a server in Germany would affect my web page rankings on search engines. But here's an odd fact that I cannot understand, this very website is served from the US. For a specific and popular 2 word search phrase, a web page here is listed at No.1 on the GOOGLE UK search and probably number 11 for the US. I never could figure it out myself but it's like that...

I've not heard of the location of a webserver affecting your rankings (think of all these companies that have servers around the world), but I have heard of who you register your domain name affecting you (but not crippling you)

JDS has an odd situation, which may be an algorithm alteration to the UK obviously suiting him better. Maybe he was discounted because people weren't typing american words like color and words that end in zing.

Where you host your website may have an impact on country specific SERPS. That is, a site hosted in Germany may have better SERPS on Google's Germany only search. I can't verify this theory but its been out there for a while.

I highly doubt that the geolocation of the server has much effect. Some hosting companies can be downgraded by allowing spammers/hackers to use their server, thus they get black listed for it.

My friend told me about oneandone being based in germany, and this causes problems with ranking on search engines...
- Can you ask your friend why he believes this? Seems strange to me.

I had a chance to look at 1and1's website yesterday and I must say they have some attractive products and offers. I can tell you this... if I were looking for a dedicated server, this provider will probably be in my short-list too!
