Well it's not as bad as the whole thing going black, but your problem is one of many. If after you've done the usual; checked all temps, drivers, AGP speed, etc. that are mentioned on the many posts about this topic, then I have one thing to say:

ATI can be your new friend.

I knew someone who put a bullet in the radiator of his company car because it always broke down... getting ideas?

BTW, anyone ever heard of the newer S3 cards, such as the 'S4deltachrome'?
I'd like to know how they hold up.

You can set the AGP speed (1x, 2x, 4x, 8x) in the BIOS (correct me if I'm wrong, people!). Many people have solved problems like these with the nVIDIA cards by setting the AGP speed at a lower number.

Does your card have at least a passive heat sink? It would be a good idea to have a fan hooked up. If it wont correct the problem, at least it will extend the life of the card. Also, you should have case fans no matter what. It's better for everything in the case.

Try this link..

GeForce tweak utility

It lets you change your AGP speed and a whole lot of other stuff... including overclocking your video card. Try it out, see if it works.

Hmm... The link seems to be down everywhere for now. It's probably all linked to one site.

Hang in there

If you downloaded the one I mentioned, the AGP speed should be under the 'system' tab.
