PHP 5 released

The long awaited final release of PHP 5.0.0 is out!

Some details from http://www.php.net

Quote:
Some of the key features of PHP 5 include:

* The Zend Engine II with a new object model and dozens of new features.
* XML support has been completely redone in PHP 5, all extensions are now focused around the excellent libxml2 library (http://www.xmlsoft.org/).
* A new SimpleXML extension for easily accessing and manipulating XML as PHP objects. It can also interface with the DOM extension and vice-versa.
* A brand new built-in SOAP extension for interoperability with Web Services.
* A new MySQL extension named MySQLi for developers using MySQL 4.1 and later. This new extension includes an object-oriented interface in addition to a traditional interface; as well as support for many of MySQL's new features, such as prepared statements.
* SQLite has been bundled with PHP. For more information on SQLite, please visit their website.
* Streams have been greatly improved, including the ability to access low-level socket operations on streams.
* And lots more...

By the way, has anyone used SQLite before?

Along the same topic (sort-of...), when I saw the announcement for 5.0 it was coupled with the announcement of a commercial compiler for PHP called Roadsend.

I am just in the process of learning PHP, but this peeked my interest. Does PHP need a compiler? Is this an attempt to broaden the realm of PHP?

I would like to hear from some of you PHP pros on your thoughts.

I've been thinking about this - if one is proficient in Machine, Assembly or High-level languages like C, C++, Java or some others; this PHP compiler thingy is not going to be something you'd just have to get (or even learn PHP just to be able to use it).

If I really wanted to write my own 'software', I'd prefer learning C++ or Java to do just that. Seeing how you're (dsmith) an 'expert' with C/C++, I really don't see how this PHP compiler thingy is going to make your life (or mine) any easier.

Over the last few days, I've been communicating with Scott about PHP5 on the VPS and we both agree that it's not a priority right now. If it were up to me, I'd wait another year before upgrading... Maybe that's not such a good idea for most people but for me, I am in the middle of writing a search engine and I really want to do it with something I know quite well (i.e. PHP4).

About SQLite: I've never used it but I've read up on it... I think that since it's an embeddable db engine, it's more appropriate for software developers.

Here is another interesting link that compares ASP.NET to PHP4 & PHP5. Anyone that was wondering about OOP in PHP5, it seems that PHP is attempting to challenge ASP.NET more directly.

While the article is posted on Oracles site (a seemingly anti-microsoft site), it is very objective and I think points out the good and bad in both of these platforms.
