Question

2.2Mbps Host...

Hello,

I am currently training to become a Network Technician (CISCO CCNA). I am though a little lost on the Mbps relates to KB's and MB's...

This is my problem:
I want to get a 2.2Mbps line to my new house to host three (3) servers. The three servers will be hosting:
(1) Host websites, and personal files, will not have much usages on the network mostly for personal use, i.e. desktop use.
(2) Host a Public Shell Server, I will allow people to have about 50 MB of space, and I will fill out this server as full as possible (I will take donations to pay for Internet circuit.)
(3) Host about 128 (on average) Virtual Tours of houses (seen mostly on brokers sites but sometimes on Realtors sites), this will be about 6 - 8MB each.

Will these servers overload the 2.2Mbps DSL Circuit? Do I need something more?

Also, I'm not sure, because I do not have much work with DSL lines, it is possible to host a server off of one correct? I do believe that you must dial in, but I think the router is what dials in, and than routes out a "All-Ways-On" Internet connection? Or do you even have to dial in?

Thanks,
Andrew

I think that the shell server will mostly load the line

people will try things that will load the line, but you can limit the things they can.
as a network technician you should be able to limit the max. data transfer and bandwidth?
then you can limit each account, making it less useful for abusers..

those tours will load your line to the max, but if they are not visited all the time that shouldn't be a problem

Yes I will do this, but I cant restrict it so much where they cant function.

I am not sure how often they will be accessed, but it will be listed on Realtors sites and stuff for people to look at...

Should I look into a higher bandwidth line?

I think I might limit the Shell server, and depending on how much donations I receive upgrade the line from there, otherwise limit the bandwidth usages, greatly if needed...

Thanks,
Andrew

I was hoping that maybe you could give me your opinion on a T1 line.

Would it be a great performance boast and not chock up the line if I used a T1 line with the set up in the first post?

Thanks,
Andrew

DSL and Cable services usually have separate bandwidths for upstream and downstream. When you say 2.2Mbps, that is most likely the downstream bandwidth and wouldn't be relevant if you are hosting servers. The upstream is usually much lower (in some cases 1/10th) of the downstream. More on DSL flavours here.

You kinda dial in with most DSL providers if they use PPPOE. Point to Point Protocol Over Ethernet (PPPOE) allows users to log on and off from their high speed or broadband internet connection. Just make sure that your router has support for this and you don't have to worry to much.

A T1 line would likely be much better for hosting but could cost a whole lot more. You will also need specialized equipment - a router with a T1 link (not a cheapie broadband router), csu/dsu, cabling, etc.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that is SDSL so it symmetrical Up and Down. I though I said this is my first post, but I had to write it twice, I put it in the fist copy, but must have forgotten to add in the second....

I plan to buy a CISCO router (this is what I am training on (CISCO CCNA Cert)). Having a T1 circuit rather than a SDSL line would be beneficial even over the cost think of the router...

Thanks,
Andrew
