help: Computer tower noises

Hi everyone,
This is the first time I'm posting a message in here.
I'm using WindowsXP OS (don't think it relates to the hardware problem)...
Well for the past few days my computer tower is making a lot of noises (louder than before)....and I have no idea why it makes so much noises now...
So I need some advice/comments....
I'm wondering if there's any possible causes of these and is it a serious problem that might cause computer breakdown later on....does anyone knows???

Thanks for your help

Regards,
Kelly

The only actual mechanincal components of a computer are:
  • CPU fan
  • Power supply Fan
  • Graphics Card Fan (optional)
  • Hard disk(s)
  • CD drive (but only if there's something in it)
Fans do tend to clog up with dust in time. I suggest you take the case off your computer (check it doesn't void the warranty first) & turn the PC on. See if you can trace which component is making the noise. If it's a fan, you could try spraying it with compressed air to see if it frees up. Otherwise replacement is the only option, but fans are cheap.

If a fan fails, your computer will begin to overheat. If the CPU overheats, your computer will crash within a few minutes. For the graphics card, your display will get more & more corrupt until it's blank. A Power Supply fan failure isn't a good thing either, could cause a surge to the components & fry all.

Essentially, try and combat this fast!

CyrixOnFire will become famous soon enough
Hello Kelly lam. The problem is not likely the hard drive because something in it would be making noise. I don't see why it would do that since it's sealed from the outside. It would just crash. So the problem is most likely a fan. When you locate the fan making noise, like Garth Farley said, just replace it. They're cheap no matter where you live. In the worst case, it will be the power supply fan. You can either clean it with compressed air, or get it serviced. Do not open the power supply. It may kill you even when it's off due to the very large capacitors in it. If it needs to be opened, let some service guy zap himself.

Thanks.
I've somehow corrected the problem...no more loud noises.
Should have read CyrixOnFire's message before opening up my tower...damn...the power supply was dangerous...i managed to pull my hand from the shock in time....phew...scary... I didn't really know that was the power supply before but saw that there was a fan in there so i opened it up n kind of trying to get rid of the dust....There's heaps of dusts in the cpu fan...i got some of it out...but there's still more...it's too hard to get it out.

By the way, i've never heard of cleaning it with compressed air (cpu fans)...how do you do that???

You can buy canisters of compressed air, like an aerosol, which you can spray in the little gaps around the fan to clear out the dust. You get a thin straw thingy to target better. They're handy for things like this.
