HDD HelpHi, I have a IBM laptop, recently it stopped working, the technecian says that I need to replace the Hard disk. I really dont want to replace this HDD, but would like to buy a external HDD and use it a the primary Hard Disk.
Can I do that? is this possible? |

Well I don't quite know. USB hard drives are notoriously slow (USB 1 anyway). Since you're not getting much help from IBM, I'm guessing it's well out of warranty (and you're stuck with USB1). It would literally take hours to fully boot up a system using a USB connection, and you'd need to patience of a buddah to use it.
Also, you'd need a system that supports booting from USB devices - only a recent development - unlikely to be a feature of your system. Could you post up details on your IBM laptop? Parts are available elsewhere, no matter what IBM's technicians say - if you know where to look. I, for instance, am typing this on my beloved Thinkpad 380z, about 6 years old, whose screen broke this time last year. I traced the fault to the cord that connects the LCD to the motherboard (I'm not expert on hardware, it had a hole It may be possible to find another system like your own which has also broken, but the harddrive is intact. And the HD is easily switched. Post up your specs, I'll find the part number from the IBM website (impressive details are available if you look hard enough), and lets see what we can do! NoteI'll be starting a new job on Monday, so I'll probably be behaving by not spending too much time on the net (for a little while anyway), but I'll do my best. GF |

Look for a replacement drive on say Ebay...your manuals might tell you how to replace it. If you are comfortable doing it, you could save a bundle of money.
