From Webopedia
Quote:
Short for original equipment manufacturer, which is a misleading term for a company that has a special relationship with computer producers. OEMs buy computers in bulk and customize them for a particular application. They then sell the customized computer under their own name. The term is really a misnomer because OEMs are not the original manufacturers -- they are the customizers.

and from the AMD FAQ
Quote:
Q: What is the difference between the “Barton” and “Thoroughbred” cores? Is the “Barton” core designed for thin-and-light?
A: The major difference is that the “Barton” core nearly doubles the L2 cache from 256k to 512k for a total of 640K cache.

Hope that helps. Therefore Barton is better but generally more expensive.

Note Barton are generally used for mobile AMD chips for Laptops etc. but I may be wrong.

Retail (or "boxed retail," "PIB," "Processor in a Box") versions usually include a heatsink-fan (which may or may not be already mounted on the processor), user instructions, warrantee, etc. and OEM versions do not.

I always find it best to pay a little extra to get a better name for processors/hard drives, just because there is a better chance the product will be a little bit better.

Imagine if you purchased a cheap HD and then it crashed, and of course you forgot to backup. Would you rethink the HD you buy next time?

(I think) The Barton core isn't necessarily more or less quality or reliability, but between a Thoroughbred and a Barton core of the same model number, the barton is better. With CPUs, generally you don't pay more for reliability like RAM or a hard drive, but for speed.
