Help choosing a database for home networkOk I need a little advice at home I have a server that I download all of my game patches and other files to, this computer is currently 600 GB of Hard drive space and growing. Over the whole house I know have a little over 1200 GB or 1.2 TB. Now the problem is that with all that I have no databases to help me organize it and things are starting to get hard to find. I do have plans in the future to extend the Network to my car as well so that will only add to the networks size. The bottom line is I need databases to help me find files and to be able to search the network. My question is what database should I use?

Are you talking about files on a local filesystem? I hear Google might be releasing a client search program that you'll be able to use to search the Internet as well as files on your local computer(s). Other programs like Sleuthhound might do the same.
But if you a database, I would go with MySQL. |

I am looking for a database system Like MYSQL or Access but it for local Computers over my network. I just wasn't sure which database system would best suit my needs.

I would go with MySQL over Access.

Ok to use MySQL I would need a web server how big would this computer need to be? I was also wondering if I use a a smaller pc to run the web server and database rather than installing the web server and database on one of the filesevers would this be ok?

It depends on the application but you could run a database server on its own.

You DON'T NEED a web server to run (or use) the mysql server. It's just a lot easier to manage the database via a web page (e.g. phpmyadmin). Also, I believe dsmith uses his own DATABASE, maybe he has some ideas/suggestions.
