hdd probs

hi there..

this ones a prob that is bugging me and my friend for past one week now.. actually his PC irritates everytime during boot and after boot..

1.During Boot
when we boot win 98 evertime we get a message...

your hard disk has some bad sectors and has to be scanned ..
it does a surface scan and then starts to scan for each cluster for bad clusters...
it shows no bad sectors notation on the screen...i.e in that block representation of memory..
and then after that it gets stuck up at some memory location 8,176 bytes...
and stops...

but if we escape and go before surface scan then the PC is alright--no problem..

plzzz suggest a remedy..

2.After Boot
If we escape and work ..it works fine...
but this next problem is something different..

everytime we put a floppy in the drive ..norton gives a message saying that
you master boot record has been changed
so you want to let it change or ignore the change or it happens just leave it..

plzz suggest ...
------------------
thanks in advance..

jrobbio will become famous soon enough
Try skipping scandisk on boot and using the one within Win98 to see if it can detect any problems.

I've had something like this before and its hit or miss whether you will fix it or not.

i tried doing that.. the scandisk in windows does not say there are any bad sectors... but it does say "windows found errors on this drive and fixed them all"... i immediately rebooted to check if the scandisk in DOS had vanished.... it had not..

Have you a good up-to-date virus scanner? Some viruses change the MBR, and I do believe Windows compares it with a backup from the last boot to ensure no HD problems - and runs scandisk as a result.

It sounds to me like a virus.

Or, you could disable scandisk on boot (not recommended - but here to be thorough) as follows:
Using regedit, navigate to the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\FileSystem

Create a new binary value, name it "DisableScandiskOnBoot" and give it a value 01.

I think maybe msconfig has an option to do the equivalent.
