disappearing desktop

Ok so as I was installing something my computer froze and I was unable to use ctl+alt+del to get out of it. So...I turned it off. When I restarted the comp all of my desktop items were gone. I am unable to create new shortcuts on the desktop, and when I click and drag the square doesn't show up either. Everything else seems to be working fine, however it is very annoying to have nothing on the desktop. Does anyone know of a way to fix this? Ive tried a google search and come up with nothing.

Edit: Ok nm, i fixed it

All i had to do was right click, go to "Arrange Icons By", then i selected show desktop items. I am not sure how it got unselected, but that was all that needed to be done .
