Question

Multi-Lingual Webpages & A Couple General Questions.

Hi All,

I am in the process of releasing my own debut CD. One of the things I'm rushing to get down is my website. I would like to make the website a multilingual one so I will be able to reach a wider variety of people.

How difficult would this task be to take on myself(in terms of the multi-lingual thing)?

If I chose to pay a web designer to do this for me which I probably will since I really need to invest more time in the music itself, do any of you no of a company or individual that can do this relatively cheap.

I've built some small simple webpages in the past and have some basic knowledge of HTML and was considering just using something along the lines of Frontpage or something and getting the translation down through friends and such.

The point is I want the page to look very professional but I'm looking for advise on different routes I can take to reach my ultimate goal.

Thanks in advance for your advise.

web page

well since i have got experienced with macromedia dreamweaver i would suggest to use tht program instead of frontpage.... Coz now days i belive dreamweaver does a lot better job the front page????? and no you should be able to do it if like you say have done few of them or you can always ask the students you are taking this course and got a little knowledge to do it for you for a cheaper price..... about multi lingual once you put in the code for one language its easy from then on u just keep changing the language name.... i have a friend you has rectenly graduated in CIS major and got a job will ask her if she is willing to take this task and if she is will pass on ur info so you both can talk directly without me involved...lol... i am a cis student right now but got little knowledge and if i can be of any help will surely do. since i loveeee designing part and hateeee this programing part heeheee.... well good luck.

Thanks Homz,

Yeah, I have the whole Macro Media Bundle and started messing around with it but the music project started going and oh well. Definitely let me know if your friend can help. Thanks again for the advise.

Hello dwaunthomas,

Welcome to GIDForums™ and congratulations on cutting your first CD!

Multi-lingual site, huh? I suddenly hear the announcer in my head going, "Kids, don't try this at home!". Seriously, give this to a professional if you want to be taken seriously in the music industry... I know there is at least one web designer who frequents this forum, it's not hard to miss him

Otherwise, try building one yourself if you really want to, but don't try to tackle the multi-lingual bit until you're happy with the overall layout and design of the (main/English) site.

one quick fix option is to have Babblefish links which gives on the fly translations of your pages. By all means it isn't perfect but generally you get the gist of what the webpage is saying. Obviously if you speak all the languages you want to translate to then do seperate sections of your site instead with "Flag" references to languages at the top etc.

There are lots of templates and CMS systems (like a whole website package) free and for purchase available on the web if you don't want to hire a web designer. I agree with JDS though to try it yourself and if you want a CMS and don't know about PHP and mySQL maybe someone could get you started.

Yes, start by finalizing your main site, and add "eng" to be beginning of each page (enghome.html, engcontact.html, etc.) and all links.

When you get an accurate translation (say Spanish), make copies of all pages with esp- prefix and change all links.

Make one more page (index.html) to choose the language and link to:
enghome.html (english)
esphome.html (espanol)
deuhome.html (deusch)
etc.

Each xxxhome can also link to each language.

And don't use babel fish to make your own translation. You'll get stuff like
"the music of me is good hear to. The sound make high to good hear" (or something like that)
