Major Changes at Google Adsense

The last few weeks have been quite busy at Google's Adsense program.

It started with the addition of "channels", a long waited way to track seperate websites or ad formats.

A couple of days ago Google notified its publishers that they have revamped their algorithm that tracks how much a click through will earn. So the same ad could make two publishers different amounts, depending on the context of the webpage. From what I have seen, this has so far had a detrimental affect on many publishers as Google is trying to weed out a lot of crappy websites that have come online in the last few months.

JdS will become famous soon enough
I've been thinking about this new 'development' and I have mixed feelings about it. On the one side, I can relate to the idea that they're looking out for their advertisers to give them (advertisers) a bigger bang for their buck. For a service-oriented product like AdWords, this is always a good idea; in other words taking care of their advertisers / the source of AdSense's revenue stream, is a sound business decision. This also serves to build up the confidence of their existing and prospective (advertising) clients - which is obviously the right thing to do if they (Google) expect to ward off competition that they're attracting.

We, the publishers, on the other hand, will suffer reduced earnings for a good while, I suspect. But in the long term, Google ensuring their advertisers are not unhappy with AdWords will only work well for everyone concerned, including the Publishers.

As usual, I am not going to continue analysing these recent changes for very long. All I want from Google right now is my GMAIL!
